@cptgaio: Thanks captain, you're very kind as always... I'm sure we'll stay in touch thanks to your blog and Debaser, you have a lot of tips to give me. And I have only to learn from an expert like you ;) @joevanny 78: In fact, I wouldn't know if I understood it back then, even though I put in a lot of effort and listened to it all the time... For sure, the lyrics were absolutely unintelligible (some still are)... Sorry if I didn't understand the comment about Lisa Germano... but what do you mean by "inghiottire"? I thought you meant that you just can't stand her...

@adp: what a responsibility you give me! joevanny and captain are much better prepared than I am. My first serious album was actually one by Tori (from the choirgirl hotel, I was 12 years old and the shopkeeper kept asking me "do you really like tori amos? are you sure?"... exaggerating!). I've had to catch up in the years since (and I'm still catching up, of course). I recommend, in addition to this site, ondarock and scaruffi.com... I'm sure you'll discover a ton of interesting discographies! @joe vanny 78: indeed, I guessed from the other comments that we don't have much in common taste-wise, I'm more into singer-songwriters... and that’s also the greatness of Tori: bringing together two people at opposite ends like us in her reviews... @captain howdy: I share all the singer-songwriters, massive attack, lamb, portishead, and the fantastic dinosaur jr (discovered them recently)... and to mine I add my bloody valentine, blonde redhead, sparklehorse, smog, daniel johnston, the rachel's, cat power, nick cave, and sigur ros (I know, they are from the next decade, but who cares, I had to include them because they are too important for me). Of course, I need to listen to more music before I can compile a definitive list... for example, tonight I'm going to finally check out tortoise, who have intrigued me for a while but whom I’ve never listened to!

Ah...another question...did you see the artist opening for Tori's concert in Rome? What did you think...I might have listened to the last two minutes of the last song...a shame because they didn't seem bad at all...do you know the name?

ADP, to your list of the '90s, I would add, as is my duty given my nickname, the amazing Lisa Germano (the best singer-songwriter of her time, in my humble opinion), and then... well, there are others... I'll mention those that come to mind... Mercury Rev, Yo La Tengo, Ani Di Franco, the fantastic Mazzy Star, the Breeders, Eels, Low, my favorites, Red House Painters (and the Sun Kil Moon project isn’t bad at all)... Wow, it's an open list that could be much longer, I invite everyone to continue (can I do that, ADP? It’s your review; if you’d rather not, I’ll retract my invitation!). The Cranberries were indeed a somewhat marginal episode (in the history of music, certainly not in the music market of those years), and they were definitely derivative (they’ve always reminded me of The Smiths), even if No Need to Argue is definitely a nice album... I don't believe that Nirvana were overrated, certainly not more than the Smashing Pumpkins. The problem was the market that developed around them after Kurt Cobain's death, with all the posthumous compilations and somewhat necrophilic tendencies, and the continuous TV specials that can no longer say anything new about them. Before being a cultural phenomenon, Kurt Cobain was an excellent singer-songwriter; very few, before and after him, have been able to express so much anguish and turmoil in such accessible songs.

I don't have the album (I just can't stand those compilations... it's stronger than me, they don't make much sense to me), but the review is very good. I was also at the show in Rome, spectacular! It was my first time seeing her live and she blew me away! It was so emotional that it made me reevaluate some of those (many) tracks from the latest album that I didn't particularly love! At the concert, my friend and I made a girl move twice because we were convinced she had usurped one of our seats. But that wasn't the case! Poor thing... maybe it was you!

Yes, indeed, definitely snobbish, but a very likable snob, there's no denying it... it's because of the unconditional affection (and pure love) I have for her that I wish she'd release a new album that does her justice, and unfortunately, this one, in my utterly insignificant opinion, doesn't. And it's also because I care for her so much that I don't want to always justify her, anyway... @joe Vanny 78: when you can, go see her live, she's magnificent, it was my first time and it was truly moving... even though, unfortunately, she didn't perform Smokey Joe (you're right, it's beautiful... I think it's one of the few truly memorable songs by ADP). As for the comparison between ADP and Beekeeper, they still seem to me to be very similar albums: both in structure (there were gardens there, here there are characters), in production, and in the ambition/results ratio... and I swear, I hate to say it, but in my opinion neither of them can be considered a successful record. Maybe it's because I'm too demanding since my very first musical crush...

What can I say, undying... the EWF and not on Debaser seem to have appreciated it, more or less. I had many doubts, especially after listening to the first singles and hearing the interviews (now even her own descriptions of her albums are boring, a bad sign). When I listened to the album, my expectations were quite low. To me, personally, it seems like a slightly better version of The Beekeeper: a very long and quite verbose concept with few (very few) truly interesting songs. Perhaps if there were a good ten tracks less, it would have been a good album; as it is, it barely grazes a passing grade. I don’t understand why my favorite redhead keeps releasing everything she writes: I think a greater selection would significantly benefit her albums; the only lengthy concept that turned out well was Scarlet's Walk, apart from, of course, Boys for Pele, which is a masterpiece, period... a postscript: I don’t know if you’ve seen her recently, but live she's still spectacular... and that’s a good sign.
