Sure, it’s definitely possible, but I remember that the early recordings of Genesis, especially live ones, didn’t do them justice. I repeat, everyone has their off moments, and nitpicking a band as immense as Genesis is unfair. A group that struggled to get by just to follow their path (even though Gabriel, Rutherford, and Banks came from wealthy families), who almost gave it all up at the beginning, but then thanks to their success in Italy and Belgium changed their minds, and went on to create works like "Foxtrot" and "Selling England" deserves forgiveness for anything. Then there's the post-Gabriel era, which is another story.

nobody is perfect, everyone has messed up in life and had off nights. however, I would like to know which live performances and bootlegs you are talking about if you don’t mind. you know us convinced "Gabrielites" are always on high alert.

It's curious how this not-so-pleasant review for Genesis fans (how on earth can you give only 4 to Foxtrot? It's something that can't be understood!!) has sparked a nice civil discussion for once. Squalo is right; punk becomes interesting when it has external influences. Otherwise, at least for me, it's just noise.

I add that making classical music is not a matter of genres but rather the cultured artist who creates classical music. The Doors were not progressive, but their music was excellent and refined (especially thanks to the immense Morrison) despite not having technical virtuosos, apart from Manzarek.

we condemn instead the crap like the ordinary and vulgar pop that has been reigning for time immemorial, starting with roundabouts by the sea and polka-dotted zebras in the 60s and horrifically evolving through damned springs, solitudes where Marco left and the moanings of Britney Spears (Donna Summer was another thing!!)

And then, honestly, comparing two opposing genres like prog and punk leads nowhere, just chatter. There are things that make no sense to compare. It’s like saying that chocolate is much better than tripe with beans. Points of view. The only thing that is not a point of view is the technical quality of a piece of music. That’s not subjective.

I cheated, I know, I only mentioned groups like The Clash, who are more gifted and creative than others. And it's scientific that if you only know three chords, you can't be creative. But I repeat, in my opinion, there has been worse than punk and I don't feel like condemning it because I've never seriously delved into its knowledge, not out of prejudice but because my ear demands melody, the ear is subjective.

breus you start by saying: When it comes to Genesis and the historic albums they released in the first half of the '70s, one must always tread carefully, because the band’s exegetes are waiting for you, ready to beat you up (or give you a lecture) if every detail doesn't match up.
TOO TRUE

There have been some terrible prog albums, indeed pompous, grandiloquent, pretentious. And no one claims that those who make prog know how to play and those who make punk do not. I have never said such a thing. I only say that, in terms of content and the technical challenges of composition and listening, progressive music is certainly more cultured and less accessible to everyone than punk. It's not punk that has ruined music; it has evolved like all musical genres, so it has also experienced excellent moments. In my opinion, the degeneration of music is largely due to the wild commercialization that started in the early '80s. The musical work conceived as a purely marketing operation, like a disposable consumer good, and naturally the advent of music videos was the final blow. I know that this last assertion will not be shared by many. It is true that there are beautiful music videos that enhance the musical piece, but most of the time it’s always the same old story with the right ingredients: sex, girls, dancing, fake and glossy images that have nothing to do with the context of the song presented. This does not enhance the music but demeans it and distracts the ear. The sense of hearing has now become optional; only appearance matters, the image, indeed.
