Donju, in fact, you were a bit too harsh. I believe that the plot or the fact that Mendes declared himself a leftist intellectual (something I was unaware of as a non-technical and indifferent cinephile) raised false expectations in you. I might be mistaken, but I had the impression that this film wasn't as "leftist" as you imagined; I understand your disappointment if you were expecting an example of "extreme" cinema. You are right, it is simply a petit-bourgeois film, and should be regarded as such. Therefore, I agree with Bartleboom when he says that the film has no 'social significance'; in fact, I believe it is strongly individualistic. Each character's attention is focused exclusively on their own obsessions, in an almost selfish manner; Lester himself was too caught up in what had happened to him (the close encounters with the nymph and the marine) to care that his daughter wanted to run away from home. In the end, the protagonists' stories intertwine in a sort of fatalistic design, not because they want it to; this leads me to believe that the director wasn't seeking a "mass catharsis," he simply wanted to tell the story of an ordinary family, a reflection of certain contradictions of the American lifestyle and, precisely for that reason, absolutely ordinary in its dramatic nature. Hilarious play, even though Salemme keeps recycling himself, with alternating success, between cinema and theater (Geremia the blackbird in ''L'amico del cuore'' is the cinematic adaptation of Cico, just as ''Amore a prima vista'' takes an idea from ''Premiata Pasticceria Bellavista''). Bisius it's a pity you don't like Neapolitan theater (I assume you've never seen a play by Eduardo though :P)

I’d like to share an observation regarding the "unmistakable" style of Dario Argento (from a perfectly incompetent perspective). After watching The Cat O' Nine Tales, I found myself on a local TV channel watching another film I didn’t know, and I was struck by a "similarity": certain shots had a frantic, almost convulsive rhythm; the characters' movements seemed to be "accelerated" like when you hit the forward button on a VCR. It was The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Maybe (certainly) it’s nonsense, but when I noticed this detail, I immediately thought of Silver Dario.

In any case, the chosen one absolved himself since he said he wants to set the song from the first scene as his ringtone :-D
