Steve Vai Passion And Warfare

Um.. indeed I said that Hendrix was interesting and important, and this also applies to Lou Reed, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, etc. I didn't say anything against pop.

Robert Fripp is overrated. He's not even a fraction of Vai. Boring melodies, bland harmonies, zero counterpoint, terrible timbre. You like to hide behind "De gustibus" to avoid being contradicted! Deep down, you believe that music cannot really be discussed because tastes are subjective, and so in the end, everyone is right and no one is. But there are objective elements around which one can discuss! And those are the ones I'm talking about.

First: Vai plays very slowly in some pieces, it depends on the effect he wants to achieve. Second: people remember Hendrix's pieces because they were reduced to the classic song format, with lyrics, riffs, and choruses; it was music for the uneducated masses! And yet, although it was a pop product, its innovation, beauty, and importance are beyond doubt! But the reason Vai isn’t appreciated is that he’s too sophisticated, not because he isn’t valid. It has always been this way! Look at how many Oscars geniuses like Leone, Kubrick, or Chaplin have received! Hey, did they even get any? How could they not have? There must be a mistake; they are geniuses! So, are you telling me that Leone never won an Oscar? But I remember that... Ah... he didn’t win it as a director... I see... and yet... I don’t know, I guess that means he wasn’t a genius.

Yes, the fact is that we can't take these people anymore! They know nothing about music theory and guitar technique, and their listening habits are limited to one or two genres. They perceive music in an extremely superficial way, like a frustrated high school kid does, and they can't appreciate an original harmonic progression, a truly interesting melody, or the blending of multiple musical genres. And they want to impose this on us! Our sophistication becomes a flaw, a sin! And then they live in the shadow of prehistoric myths; they can't see beyond Van Halen, trapped in their rigid mental schemes. They repeat a bunch of clichés they’ve heard around, like "All technique and no feeling" (by the way, they don't even have a clear idea of what feeling is).

Caaaaalma! Vai, it's not just ultra-technical! Time passes but I still keep hearing the same bullshit! Now, the subjectivity of taste doesn't matter anymore: if someone thinks that Vai is just technique, they have a very poor musical education or deeply rooted prejudices. Vai is great, maybe unbearable, but still great. He may have made some crappy records too, but don't give me the usual nostalgic Hendrix speech like "we're tired of ultra-technical guitarists without emotions!"
What the hell are you talking about!

Okay, the review wasn't necessary, but it doesn't hurt anyone, right?
