The avant-garde often requires a lot of technique, it depends. If we're talking about Cage, no, it doesn't require technique. It doesn't even require a brain, imagine...

Yes? And what would the technique in cinema be if not these things I've told you? Do you perhaps expect Kubrick to shoot a film while doing a handstand? When we talk about virtuosity in cinema, we're referring exactly to what I mean. There is no other interpretative possibility. If you think there is, give me some examples.

In Kubrick, there is so much virtuosity! Setting aside the special effects in 2001, which were incredible for that time, we can remember the use of the Steady-cam in Shining (invented specifically for that film), the attention to historical reconstruction in Barry Lyndon, and the ultra-fast montages of A Clockwork Orange (with musical comments that are as spot-on as they are unlikely!). Kubrick is perhaps the most technical of all! I really don’t know what film you’ve seen! I hate Cage and everyone like him; you can read my comments in the review on "Andrea Neumann" to understand how much I can detest certain people.

In my opinion, the difference does not lie in the timbre. People are simply biased against ultra-technical electric guitarists. Why? Because most of them are indeed expressionless (Malmsteen, Becker, and the like), leading people to have preconceived notions about all the others (who may be a minority, but they exist!). Vai is a good musician, and occasionally he has even produced masterpieces! He may not be Frank Zappa or Roger Waters, but let’s not lump him in with that group of talentless guitarists! In the end, I can’t help but think that his technical ability has been his curse, as it has put everyone off against him.

Yes, with that thing about superficial listening, he was referring to a conversation he was having with me, I confirm.

Guys, for the last time! In Vai there are not just virtuosity; if you only see that, it's your problem! And anyway, virtuosity in music, if it's not an end in itself, doesn't harm, on the contrary!
