The album doesn't add anything new to what the System have done; it's characterized by the typical sounds of the band's less aggressive tracks, but with fewer elements. It's not a bad album, just unnecessary. A fan might appreciate it a lot (I don't), but I can't say how long the listening experience will last! Doesn't it seem a bit flat at times?

However, it's worth mentioning "Praise the lord and pass the ammutination," the masterpiece of the album, worthy of the best tracks from the System! Truly beautiful!

From what I've gathered, the lyrics don't require the "vast culture" you speak of; it’s enough to be a fifteen-year-old idiot in high school and read crappy novels. The quotes are probably made haphazardly (Battiato Style), but I don't see anything wrong with that in the end (of course, you don't need to be a professor to do things like that!). I've often read that Venom are the inventors or forerunners of black metal, but I've never been convinced by that: if they had made an album titled "New Metal" instead of "Black Metal," would they have been associated with Korn? Probably. Cradle Of Filth live are one of the most terrible things I've ever seen.
