And then you can't really argue with a "they messed up." Go explain it to someone who got hooked on Scar Tissue and will keep doing so with Stadium that the Red Hot were different before, come on, try to argue it, unless you also think that they have developed better instrumentation in recent times. Argue the sound, the balls of the early Red Hot, argue that Jeff Buckley is better than Lenny Kravitz, argue that John Zorn is better than Fausto Papetti.

If Maynard were to sing "mamma mi manchi" conveying something meaningful to me, I’d be totally fine with that. The album flows linearly because the offbeats and all the associated antics are merely self-serving; the technique in "Aenema" is at the service of emotion, the rest is chicken feed. I’m not saying anything concrete because music has an elusive substance, and that’s what matters; I couldn’t care less about the mixing, for the concrete, there are the deli owners.

I knew that praises and apologies wouldn’t be lacking, it's a matter of taste and sensitivity, nothing to say. I'm not missing either Maynard's screams or a more punchy style, the slowness doesn’t scare me (you should see what I listen to), I certainly didn't want another Aenima or another Undertow. Miles Davis went electric, he changed but retained a sublime inspiration. The Tool have changed, losing that inspiration. What seems like instrumental virtuosity (for whatever that may be worth) might lead someone to think the music has gained value, when instead it’s just a more ingratiating way of making the instruments sound, smoke and mirrors. But then again, there are those who say the latest Red Hot are "mature," and that Flea has never played so well. Nonsense, but that’s just an opinion.

And then yes, Jurassic, the arpeggios of Right in Two really make blush those who have truly loved Tool. I’d like to point out a couple of vocal passages in Rosetta Stoned as well. If these are the Tool in the metaphysical sense that killgod talks about... but on the other hand, kill-god, metaphysics, bah, I'm scared. It's all just a game, of course.

The review seems fair to me, just like the album. I would be curious to know which bands of much greater value you’re talking about in the current rock scene. "Much greater value" than Helmet? Name names.

Well, I didn't say "dicks" or "metal crap." We're talking about inspiration, about things to say, and in my opinion, Tool said it all before. I couldn't care less about the musicianship and the references that killgod talks about, or all those wanking rants about Fibonacci and the like. Lateralus is a higher-level album, but a distant relative of Aenima, trust me, simply because it's less inspired. Let's not even talk about 10,000 Days; a few more listens just let me observe some ridiculous overstepping that I had missed before. Do you have Flood at hand? Well, track 9 of Undertow, crank up the volume and get an idea of when our friends were serious.

Well, does drugs do good or bad like everything else, that final phrase seemed to me rhetorical and essentially useless like everything that preceded it, including the album. It’s certainly not the possible elimination of drugs that has altered the creative verve of the RHCP; if that were the case, I would pay for a couple of kilos of doses myself.

Uselessness applied. I would have given the review a 2 for the passion, but that concluding sentence...
John Zorn Masada, Vol. 3: Gimel

Undoubtedly one of the most enlightened projects in modern jazz, the best thing I know is the Live in Warsaw, featuring a poignant performance by the String Trio. The round number doesn’t belong to Zorn, so I’ll bump the average rating up from 5.
