Guys, study Kant. You will discover what the judgment of taste in art is. I can't explain it to you here. Really, not out of spite. I keep saying that Malmsteen's concert falls under the genre of classical music, electric guitar or not. Best regards.

no evaluation on form, that’s a matter of taste; even if it’s based on a technical aspect, it has nothing to do with it, a matter of taste it is and remains.

matt7, you are oversimplifying the issue (by a lot). So: the concert by Malmsteen (that one and only, not all his works) should be considered in the "classical music" genre NOT BECAUSE IT'S A MASTERPIECE OF ART but because it adheres to those "conventions" (which are many) or whatever we want to call them that classify it as a classical album. If you write a requiem tomorrow and follow these "conventions," even if you create a pile of crap, you have written a piece of classical music. EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT NAMED MOZART.

However, seeking objectivity by making judgments of taste (flat phrasing, etc.) is a contradiction.

What comparisons... McLaughin plays an entirely different genre. It's a shame that in Black Star you only hear the licks and the scales.

So: forget about the live performance, where he ALSO (not only) plays his "rock" tracks. Now consider only "Concerto suite etc...". The compositions were CREATED SPECIFICALLY to be played with the orchestra, not with drums, bass, and keyboards. Period. Furthermore, the titles of the individual tracks (and the album title itself) say it all. It's a work that should be classified under the genre "classical music."

What comparisons you make, matt7. In S&M, the orchestra merely serves as an accessory to the band. It’s not a concert for Group and Orchestra (like the one by Deep Purple, for example). Malmsteen's Concerto is a concert written for GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA, just as it could be a concert written for VIOLIN AND ORCHESTRA or for PIANO AND ORCHESTRA. It might even be terrible, sure: but the structure is that. A concert THAT IS SPECIFICALLY CREATED for solo instrument and orchestra. Please educate yourself.

nothing, from the first to the last word. first of all, you can't just untie the "formal" discourse from that related to emotions as if it were nothing. no one has ever said that Malmsteen makes classical music, not even he does (even though his work with the orchestra can be placed in that genre); at most he might have said he makes neoclassical ROCK. Whether it is incredibly flat is very, very, very debatable; he may always use the same scales and arpeggios, but I actually find his phrasing very elegant. then what kind of accompaniment should he have? a flashy accompaniment, perhaps? as for the tension, that's another story... however, regarding the fact that he plays without ever stopping, we can make an objective judgment: that's simply not true.

If you (really) have to talk about the "formal plan" (ugh...) at least do it properly, I don’t agree with anything you say, including your "search" for objectivity.
