Now I’ll explain why I am PARTIALLY in agreement with what you’re saying; it’s naturally terrifying to think about listening to a certain musician because they do 15-finger tapping or play with their ears bent... However, certain musicians (including the aforementioned Gilmour) manage to make you forget that the song might actually be REALLY UGLY by delivering TRULY EXPRESSIVE solos. At that point, I listen to the song even if it’s bad; and I listen exclusively to experience the BEAUTY of the solo.

Ashanti, I partly agree with what you're saying (I'll explain why later), but it seemed to me that from the post, Easy wanted to make a point like "TRUE musicians are those who are always seeking out the new and the innovative," leading to the conclusion that "bending and vibrato are now utterly predictable and banal." I want to emphasize that this is what it seemed to me; I could be mistaken; if not, I don't agree. :)

Of course, I'm not saying that a guitarist MUST use bends or vibratos. Pat Metheny hardly ever uses them, yet he has an incredible touch. But to go so far as to disdain them... Even though I hope I misunderstood the post.

NO COMMENT on the pompous language, I had serious difficulties reconstructing your (BRRRRR) reasoning; however, I wanted to emphasize AT LEAST one thing: "they are just shortcuts, a priori schemes, which as such constitute nothing but the 'already said.' AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH what a hyperbolic reasoning! And then: what a suspicious attitude towards artists! Do you think that a Gilmour created such a unique touch, made of bends and vibratos, out of a need to hide? Well... of those you mentioned, I only know the one from "the spirit etc..." and I believe it's one of his best... But in any case, I can tell you that I've seen him in action in the g3! In his "improvisations"! I must have formed an idea of his playing style! Or is the g3 not enough?

It was just a figure of speech... I know his solos are hard, and very technically demanding! To be honest, in the G3 DVD with Petrucci, all three of them kinda sucked (how far away the days of G3 with Johnson seem...) but it seemed obvious to me that Petrucci can't put a bit of feeling into his solos, not even in a pentatonic scale! At this point, I wonder: what’s the point of all this (supposed) variety? Then, compared to Petrucci (and not just him), Vai and Malmsteen have a killer touch, and Satriani comes right after them (I know, those are stupid comparisons, but I just had to respond...)
