I tried to listen to it again some time ago after I had dismissed it as unlistenable. I didn’t make it to the end. It indeed operates on math-rock and post-rock in the same way (random deconstruction) that Royal Truxx did regarding vintage rock in Twin Infinitives. In my opinion, Ian Williams is a bit of a snobby hipster, and Battles prove that (gay vocals, popped collars, and keyboards played with a guitar on the lap).

Great album! Thanks again to Chris for passing it on to me, but lately he’s been releasing a ton of stuff of questionable quality. Steve Morgen, on the other hand, doesn’t blow my mind. Fuzz all the way: the New Zealanders Human Instinct (the album is aptly called Stoned Guitar).

I would instead recommend Five Horse Johnson, which was reviewed by supersoul some time ago. They are more into the filthy blues and it seems they've swapped a member here and there with Clutch.
