?? Who are you mad at? "If you didn't make it on the charts, you were either a loser or a fucking alternative"? You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Come on, just chill out.

Walter, you’re digging your own grave. Your reasoning has holes everywhere. Don’t you know that the more publicity a group has, the more they sell? Have you never thought about this? Even for the biggest names, record labels make estimates on potential sales based on how much they’ve spent on advertising. This is called the Market, not Music. Well, whatever. @Saputello: for me, it’s the exact opposite; you can’t imagine how much. It’s a matter of taste.

It was what I was thinking too. Walter, why do you insist on confusing the "History of Music" with the "History of Sales Charts"? The collective imagination is an entity created by the major media (in this case TV, see MTV), and it certainly shouldn't be taken into consideration when talking about Music.

In fact, the underground rock scene of the 80s, which Aniel calls "the other side of the coin," is not the offspring of the 70s but of the 60s (metal aside). In this sense, there has been a break.

"We rockers might be interested in 80s rock, but what has remained for the rest of the population? Led Zeppelin, Who, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, etc., or Tortoise, Fugazi, Dadamah, Mercury Rev, etc.?" But those are 90s bands. "From the 80s, there will be more Michael Jackson, Madonna, George Michael, and Prince rather than the lesser-known rock bands, which are very small compared to the giants of the 70s." Not true! Who told you that? "I'm not as stubborn as you and someone else": and who would this someone else be? :))) "I can understand Nirvana, Guns, Iron Maiden, Europe, Metallica." So, if I understand correctly: you consider Nirvana, Guns, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Europe as the relevant rock bands of the 80s, and consequently, you say they pale in comparison to the previous decade? Well, I believe you!!

But no, what’s the point of talking about ordinary people? A big group is one that reaches as many people as possible? But why? Let’s talk about music! The 80s were a decade of great music. The 70s were too. And who said that only rock exists? Klaus Schulze, Faust, Neu! are artists from the 70s that I consider infinitely superior to Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, and they didn’t play rock.

So, if Hendrix hadn't had an image, he wouldn't have become an icon, because "icon" is everything that is linked to an image. But that's obvious! Your statement, however, is not as obvious: "to be immortal, an artist necessarily needs an image." I don't think that's true, in my opinion.

If someone has an image, they have it. Otherwise, they don't. This is what I've understood from your comments.

An icon? In what sense?

It's not true that it necessarily needs an image; that's not a given. The image can be relevant or not, it depends on the context. Your "necessarily" is a generalization that can't be applied.
