The Butthole Surfers DO NOT make fun. They are the greatest heirs of bizarre Texan psychedelia and absolutely serious in their madness. Their show is a perverse spectacle that degenerates and mistreats music conceived as a form of art. It’s an altogether intelligent operation, even if absolutely not lucid, of redefining the boundary between art and garbage. The Butthole Surfers do not make fun.

Butthole Surfers MANDATORY! Best band ever, for sure, yes yes. Together with Nirvana, no though. Butthole Surfers/Minutemen/Huskers the golden trilogy of the American underground of the eighties. In my opinion, the best rock of all time.

I know I'm stating the obvious (and I don’t know much about sludge), but I’d recommend Bullhead by the Melvins if you don’t have it: a reference album for pretty much the entire doom, drone, sludge, grunge, stoner scene of the '90s. Essential at the very least.

I'm listening to it now, then I'll let you know. Just off the bat, it's much more aggressive and straightforward than Houdini. But the beauty of that album (where Cobain did more messing around than producing) was precisely its pop sensibility.

The voice bothers me; it's something I just can't get past. It's a problem I have with several bands in the genre, like Iron Monkeys or Bongzilla. Great bands, I'd say, but with a voice that (for me) is unbearable. Whatever.

The review, no offense intended, is really meaningless. The album had been recommended to me by trusted people and I was aware of its importance, etc., so I got it a while ago. I'm not too fond of it; I much prefer the first album by Black Widow.
