The Lancia Musa is a compact MPV produced by the Italian automaker Lancia from October 2004 to September 2012 at the Mirafiori plant, following its global presentation at the Geneva Motor Show in the same year. The design reflects the family feeling introduced in 2003 by the compact Lancia Ypsilon. Designed by the Lancia Style Centre, the Musa affirms its compact vehicle status with its modest dimensions: it measures 4.04 m long (just under 4 meters before the 2007 restyling), 1.70 m wide, 1.66 m high, and has a wheelbase of 2.51 meters. It is a classic car with front-wheel drive and front engine.
Compared to its sibling, the Fiat Idea, the Musa is more elegant in both its streamlined and sinuous lines as well as in its very comfortable and well-finished interiors. Approved for 5 passengers, it offers remarkable internal space and a trunk with a loading capacity ranging from 320 to 1420 dm³.
Since late 2008, it has been offered in 20 overall variants differentiated by trim levels and types of engines and transmissions (a 5 and 6-speed manual or a robotized automatic transmission called DFN, short for "Dolce Far Niente," with 5 gears). The Musa enjoys great commercial success, having been the best-selling MPV in Italy in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Presented at the 2007 Frankfurt International Motor Show, the new Lancia Musa, subject to an impressive facelift, is lengthened by 5 centimeters with the intent of giving it more character and elegance. It was also an occasion to endow it with a new, larger, protruding, and visible logo. Additionally, the trunk increases in capacity by 70 liters, reaching the top of its category. Sales in the Italian market began in October of the same year.
One of the visible changes is the tailgate, which now has a lower threshold, making loading operations easier, besides being completely redesigned with a futuristic style featuring new internally designed LED headlights and a rear window that extends down to the license plate, a characteristic also present in the third series of the Delta. New wheel covers and sporty alloy wheels are introduced.
There are 80 combinations of interior environments with body colors; new two-tone exterior color combinations alongside brand new monochrome colors. As in the New Ypsilon, the AIRtex technical fabric appears, and there are logos reading "Musa" on the leather-covered headrests for the luxurious Platinum versions. It is worth noting that the Musa also features the MP3 file management system and Blue&Me hands-free phone, a result of the collaboration between Fiat and Microsoft.
There are updates in the engine department with the introduction of the new 1.6-liter Euro 4 common rail Multijet turbo diesel, which has been re-homologated to Euro 5 since 2009 and is capable of 120 horsepower, debuting a few months earlier on the Fiat Bravo and also available on the Delta. This engine complements the old 1.9 Multijet with 8 valves. With this new engine, a new top-end trim signed by Poltrona Frau also debuts. The New Musa was launched with an aggressive advertising campaign aimed at highlighting how the luxury and elegance of a limousine can be found in a vehicle just over 4.0 meters long, featuring actress, singer, and model Carla Bruni as the spokesperson, with the song "Bang Bang" by Cher as its soundtrack.
In 2009, the 1.4 Fire 16V engine with 95 horsepower became available at a premium with Euro 5 homologation, while at the Geneva International Motor Show of the same year, the Musa EcoChic was introduced with a bi-fuel (petrol and GPL) engine capable of 78 horsepower.
From September 2009, the E-collection version arrived with a Start&Stop device and specific interior finishes, while the entire range saw the side mirrors updated to larger dimensions.
By 2011, the entire lineup met Euro 5 regulations and presented new variations. The color palette and interior trims were renewed, and new "telescope" headlights with darkened inner parabolas emerged.
