Nirvana With The Lights Out?

Well, "a genius" might be a bit of an exaggeration... but I agree with you, Sallu. My greatest regret is never having seen them live: I've watched spine-tingling recordings of amazing rock concerts.

Dasaro, I believe that even though they didn't invent anything, and even though they weren't great musicians (even if Grohl was a badass drummer), Nirvana simply composed some beautiful pieces, filled with musicality, energy, and transport. It's simple yet sincere music, reflecting what Cobain truly was at his core. Everything they've built around it interests me relatively: I've been putting Nirvana records in the player for 10 years and I still consider them excellent works.

In any case, when reviewing an album, try to analyze what it contains, not what surrounds it. Here we aim to talk about music, not gossip. It's just a suggestion, of course, no hard feelings and nothing personal.

CoolOras, can you please explain to me what "too fake" means to you? Fake compared to what?

If you’ve listened to the entire discography of Nirvana, then what you wrote is even more serious: With the Lights Out is definitely a commercial operation (although this story has kind of worn thin, in a broad sense, every record is) and contains some tracks that certainly weren’t missed, but it’s also a really interesting retrospective of the band featuring previously unreleased recordings from their beginnings up until '93, not a "The Best Of." Frankly, I couldn’t care less about the money it will bring to Courtney Love, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic, and to be honest, I don’t think the album will sell that much anyway. What annoyed me the most while reading your review is that you don’t talk about the music, except to criticize Cobain’s qualities (true, they are lacking) as a guitarist and a vocalist (and I have some objections here): you cling to the usual mantra of "they didn’t invent anything," about the invention of "grunge," making an analysis of the band that I would expect from those "little brats" you hate so much, not from someone who apparently has listened to everything by Nirvana. I repeat, you took this album as an opportunity to vent in a terribly childish manner against a band that, beyond all the tabloid chatter, was one of the most important rock bands of the nineties and produced some outstanding records (In Utero above all).

I completely agree with Odradek when he says that some things written in the review are unacceptable. You don't know a damn thing about Nirvana (or at least that's what comes through in your words): you talk about "4 catchy songs," maybe in your life you've only listened to what MTV played on repeat, certainly not "With the Lights Out," about which you wrote maybe 5 lines.

What a disgrace. More than a review, it seems like a cut-and-paste of clichés (maybe you're the one living for MTV). Your arguments are ridiculous; probably with the lights out you didn't even bother to listen to it: you just wanted an opportunity to spread crap about Nirvana, I can imagine the scene, "heh now I'm going to tell you how things really are, you know Cobain was a drug addict?"
