No Dave, simple ignorance and mental arrogance that often coincide in the same individual.

Touché, Jim, it shows that you did better in school or had better teachers. I, like many others I’ve discussed with, always held the beliefs I’ve talked about extensively, which I’ve only slowly uprooted through growth and personal inquiry, that’s for sure.

Therefore, history does not always give reason to the truth. Also because history books are written by the victors.

Come on Jim, you're from Puglia like me, haven't you ever heard some old-timer say "it was better when Mussolini was around"?

Well, I have different experiences from yours. If that's the case, the good souls of my grandparents glorified Mussolini because, in their view, he had brought security, prosperity, and peace to our country, and I’m not talking about thoughts related to those years. They tried to instill those beliefs in us when we were little.

I'll give you another example then, more elementary and historical: the Romans.
Take any history text and you'll read pages and pages about the greatness of the Romans.
They have been mythologized.
On the other hand, the other peoples are "barbarians," uncivilized, crude, peasants, in short, all the worst possible.
But it is omitted to say that the Romans were the most bloodthirsty murderers in history, let alone Hitler.
Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't celebrate their significance, but at least we should also mention things that are, so to speak, "uncomfortable."
Sure, I know what I assert might be pure utopia, a chimera, but in this way, perhaps, we could grow with more objectivity and critical sense.

Sure, as long as someone, growing up, takes a moment to inform themselves, they'll arrive at the truth. But are we sure that everyone has this interest?
I don’t think so, which is why I believe many people will live forever in ignorance and in their bigoted yet deeply rooted convictions.
Because these ancestral prejudices exist, and not everyone is interested in debunking them, whether out of laziness, or because "well, why the hell should I care, there are other problems," or because it's convenient to think that way...
