What do you mean by more "metal"? After Morningrise and its melodic openings, this was the turning point album (which starts the trilogy of "concepts," an exceptional phase for Opeth). The songs are definitely more powerful and immediate than Morningrise, but that doesn't mean that the melodic openings are lacking.

I dropped it accidentally in a record store. At first, I flinched, then I realized what record it was and I didn't even feel sorry. Bleah, these are not Mayhem.

In fact, my review really sucked, but you could have spared us the tracklist on this one...

no, wait: "on par with some of their previous masterpieces, it may come across more like an Evanescence-style hit than a Prog-Metal piece, although those who claimed this change their minds when around the four-minute mark Petrucci showcases a solo worthy of his name." "'The Dark Eternal Night' sounds very Metal thanks to Portnoy's double bass, creating an atmosphere comparable to that of Manowar, and there are odd time signatures here as well." "truly very expressive, reminiscent of 'One Last Time', follows a sort of dialogue and then a really pleasant and typical chorus of Dream Theater." ...yes, you convinced me.

I appreciate you because you’re the only one with the good taste to do it after the CD actually came out. But enough now. If you really listen to the CD, it might even risk a 2.7.

To be frank, of all "the Great Cold Distance," my twin is the one that convinces me the least. Watch out for the oversight, Last Fair* Deal Gone Down.
