Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory

But I didn’t say anything about the Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth! Why are you "assembling" me with Matt, I am Lux! You see, you’re distracted, easy? Your argument is theoretically correct, but it "falls apart" if we refer to metal and its various sub-genres, since originality and personal reinterpretation are not essential to create a decent piece. They are useful, but not indispensable. Metal (a sub-genre of rock and an evolution of hard rock) has characteristics that are quite different from the bands you mentioned. We are talking about divergent musical recipes. Sonic Youth have the DUTY to be original, creative, and incisive in their reinterpretation to say with each new album: THEY HAVE MADE A GOOD ALBUM. Creativity, originality, uniqueness of poetic style are the trademarks of the musical genre you listen to. For metal, the situation is practically the opposite. That’s why metal is often accused of musical conservatism (and not without reason). But fundamentally, metal has never needed to question itself or to reinterpret itself to survive. Because it fulfills its musical "function" anyway. How many fundamental METAL bands have made history? You can count them on the fingers of one hand... Metal is ultimately derivative. But it still has its specific function, which is technical and instrumental. That’s why when a band like Opeth emerges, it’s hailed as a miracle, as if they had overturned the rules of Music... It takes very little to be innovators in metal.

BUT WHO EVER SAID THAT FOR ME TECHNIQUE IS THE FOUNDATION OF MUSIC???? MAYBE YOU MISTOOK ME FOR MATT???? I’m just saying that from a prog metal band I expect and demand at least a minimum of aesthetic technique, because that also matters in life! In the post above, I was simply highlighting two different conceptions of quality, both influential. Upon rereading, it does seem that I lean more towards the technical one... but maybe both are needed.

What do you think about Hell's Kitchen instead... just another prog rock stereotype, in your opinion?

Well, the emotions that "Another Day" used to give me no longer do, it's true. But I’ve listened to it (and hummed it in my mind) hundreds of times. It’s only natural for this to happen. I like tear-jerking ballads; we need those too. I still remember that this is a tear-jerking ballad of a prog nature, so let's always relate it to that genre; it’s obvious that as jazz musicians, we're no one compared to DT. Simply put, there’s a jazz influence in this song, that’s all. I mean, when I listen to "Another Day," I don’t expect a jazz atmosphere in the absolute sense. I expect a ballad, as stereotypical as you want, but still moving.

I don't understand how one can fail to appreciate a ballad like "Another Day." It has that solo (not even too technical) that opens the heart. I mean... I don't know. It's a classic ballad that despite its classicism conveys emotions. It's undeniable. Anyway, being important in a historical and cultural sense (Beatles, Bob Dylan, Ramones, etc.) does not necessarily mean, in my opinion, creating quality music. One doesn't stay famous in history and influence later generations just because they've made quality music by force. So the question here is: historical/cultural quality or technical/instrumental quality?

hot water, Alias Little Idiot, what I wanted to say is that anyone WHO DOES NOT LOVE PROG METAL (and I emphasize prog metal, not progressive rock), SHOULD ABSOLUTELY REFRAIN FROM GIVING "OBJECTIVE" NEGATIVE JUDGMENTS ON THE MUSIC OF DREAM THEATER. I don’t think I need to explain why, right?

Anyway, just a small note: All the people I've heard speak badly about Dream, or at least a good 98%, FUNNY ENOUGH, don't particularly love prog metal (at best), or they really hate it...

Easy, but this way you can’t move forward. Every time someone tells you something, you start laughing and have to make the other person look like an idiot. You really do fight with Italian, my boy. DO YOU TAKE OFFENSE IF I TELL YOU THAT YOUR MUSICAL CULTURE IS TOO BROAD? WOULD YOU PREFER I TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE A DIMWIT? It's useless that every time you come up with a roster of bands from the past. You’re an encyclopedia, but YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT YOU FEEL. You shouldn’t judge the DTs as TOTAL MUSIC, but you should TAKE THEM for what they are: a prog metal band. From this premise, YOU CAN start judging. WHAT DO WE EXPECT THE DTs TO DO? ALL TOGETHER: PROOOOOOOG METAAAAAAAL! So let’s judge them in their own right, that is, FOR WHAT THEY DO. HERE WE’RE TALKING ABOUT PROG METAL, NOT SEVENTIES PROGRESSIVE...YOU ARE TOTALLY DISTORTING REALITY...you sound like Berlusconi when you respond like that. And remember that, it may sound strange, but your opinion is worth as much as mine and as that of anyone else who has a minimum of knowledge in this field. AND DON’T SAY THAT I NEVER RESPOND TO YOU, BECAUSE YOU’RE THE ONE WHO DOESN’T OPEN UP TO OTHER PEOPLE'S COMMENTS. You can’t exactly say that I seem like a die-hard DT fan; I’ve been quite balanced in talking about them, something which, let me tell you, you have NEVER done. I’m sorry, but you’re biased. I can find a lot of people who, despite having a broad musical culture, can appreciate the DTs without idolizing them. Let’s face the truth: this is a review made specifically ad personam, that is, against the fans of the DTs. And it's them you wanted to hit, not so much the DTs. A review like this, so set up, loses validity. P.S.: Whatever you respond to me (if you want to respond), avoid rewriting my sentences; it’s pointless, I remember perfectly what I write.
