Well Federica, nu metal at 30 is a bit anachronistic...:). Anyway, jokes aside, Metallica and Iron Maiden are the foundation to start from. I would say that Judas Priest are essential (I recommend Painkiller as a starting point). If you want to stay within the Thrash realm, I recommend Megadeth, some stuff from Anthrax, and PANTERA of course. If it’s melody you’re after, countless Power Metal bands await you: Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Edguy, Sonata Arctica, Avantasia. A bit of prog metal? The "unknown" Dream Theater, but also Symphony X and the young Pagan's Mind (just to name three). For death/black metal, I would wait a little if I were you, but if you really want to get into it, go for the big names OPETH. Wolfheart by Moonspell is a great album (let's stay in the gothic realm), Children of Bodom are power/death, give them a listen (or better yet, an ear). I’ll conclude with a gem: As I Lay Dying, a white metal band that dabbles in Metalcore with Nu influences. I could go on, but as a start, it’s not bad!

Perhaps "The Millionaire Waltz" echoed the style of "Bohemian" and "Somebody to Love." I don’t know; it’s refined and glamorous, elegant with a continuous dialogue between the background choruses and Freddie's voice. I’m not interested in finding repetitions of the past; it’s pointless to cling to the immediately preceding album to evaluate each new work... it’s useless and even stressful! "Tie Your Mother Down" is anything but a slip-up, believe me, and it would have shone even on Queen 1. It's the classic aggressive rock opener. I can’t believe you never liked it; it’s definitely much more incisive than "Sweet Lady" (personally). We more or less agree on the 80s Queen, except for the fact that I try to find the positive side in each album, being a fan; you can obviously just laugh it off. It’s interesting to note that Freddie admitted his was disposable pop, a great method to get rich and live the good life... Blessed honesty!

But it was born as a twin to "A Day at the Races," it's obvious there was a continuity of style between the two albums. Although inferior to its "white" brother, "Tie Your Mother Down," "The Millionaire Waltz" (brilliant), "Somebody to Love," "Drowse" (one of the most beautiful songs written by Taylor) are examples of qualitative continuity, without any upheaval of style. "All Dead All Dead," "Spread Your Wings," "We Are the Champions" (overinflated and commercialized as much as possible, but that's not the band's fault), "Sheer Heart Attack" (quite modern for its time, with that rhythm on the edge of punk/metal), the exotic "Who Needs You"... I just can't bring myself to criticize Queen before "Hot Space," they have always held that Wildean philosophy of art as something absolutely useless and self-serving, pure aesthetics (in the good sense of the term), a parody of themselves teetering between the ridiculous and the tragic, pure musical disengagement with a veiled sadness underlying it, which has always made them "mythical" in my eyes... great court jesters.

Well, what you say about the '80s Queen is also true, of course, and I would agree with you if I weren't a fan of theirs, but I ask you: how many worse albums were released in the '80s than A Kind of Magic? Not a few, believe me... The '80s are what they are for everyone! Moreover, Mercury had the great gift of making at least a song like Radio Ga Ga seem "likeable" (sung by someone else, I don’t know what would have happened to Radio Gu Gu, Radio Blah Blah). This is because Freddie's interpretation was fundamental in turning even the most bland song into "gold." Anyway, the question remains: could you tell me the qualitative difference between ANATO and ADATR? Or rather, why is the first one a good album while the second one is not (at least for you)? And what about that damn Jazz album, could it not have been a bit underrated and undervalued? And News of the World is a more than honest experimental album, right? (setting aside We Will Rock You, for which the sheet music says NO ACCORD, that's telling...)

Tell me why ANATO is a great album and A Day at the Races is repulsive. Either you pity both, or you'll have to admit that the former is a fantastic album, and the latter, while inferior, is still of quality. No creativity? A pure exercise in style? We're talking about Queen, not DT here... Interpretation and creativity were everything to them! And they weren't all that great as musicians; I mean, they were very skilled with their respective instruments, but it wasn't the technique itself that defined their trademark... unless by the term "musicians" you refer to a more general and total understanding, in which case I can agree with you.
