There's no trace of self-indulgent technique in Ayreon; the guitar solos are sporadic, the keyboard solos are more numerous but certainly not self-congratulatory, the time changes are quite natural and never forced... I mean, it’s a completely different approach from DT (who, to be fair, haven’t always fallen into self-celebration). You really have to listen to a lot to understand better. Take Pain of Salvation or some songs by Opeth (just to get back on track). Where do you see them as obsolete?
