No, I would like to know why you think, John, that Scaruffi's entry on the Beatles contains inaccuracies and what these inaccuracies would be. Just to hear a different opinion, of course.

Come on, John, that’s not the point. The fact is that anyone can be judged and Scaruffi can be criticized without any problem. However, you need to know your "enemy" well if you want to counterattack effectively and credibly.

Honestly, I consider chickens those who think the Beatles are the creators of the music as we understand it today. His is a history of rock from a socio-political and cultural point of view, and he himself admits it. So much so that he says, "I don't understand anything about Rock. I think I understand the history of Rock." Given that he considers rock to be a musical expression inferior to, say, classical music. Rock, he implies, is infused with cultural and economic imperatives, which is why he tries to "select" the artistically good stuff from the less good. And he perfectly knows that the most famous bands and artists are not always (in fact, very rarely) the best. And let's not forget that Scaruffi is a Historian, before being a historian of music.

Yes, Spock's must be dosed, or else nausea will ensue due to languid honeyed melodies..

Thank you, Lopi, but I think Steal This Album is quite far from the heights of Toxicity...

More or less, yes. Anyway, I already knew the Velvet before reading Scaruffi's thoughts, what do you think... but I discovered Beefheart thanks to him... so you see that Pierone's existence is not so pointless after all?

Thank you, Paul. I simply believe that a man of culture and musical sensitivity like Scaruffi should be "exploited" for what he has to offer. I was taken aback when he tore apart Queen, but when I discovered the existence of a certain Captain Beefheart, my criteria changed, and an album like A Kind of Magic can only be considered mediocre in the context it exists within. The fans of an artist are the last term and criterion for judging the artist itself... and yes. Even though Scaruffi gives a 6 to Madonna's albums... I'll never understand that.

Look, the issue of cover songs is absolutely irrelevant to me. It means nothing. Just because an artist pays tribute to the Beatles doesn't automatically mean that the Beatles produce quality music. Many of the artists you mentioned are certainly worth more than the Beatles. Scaruffi conducts a historical analysis, not one of tastes; you have to understand that. For example, the Velvet Underground came before the Beatles, so why glorify these fab four? We should know more about the underground and focus less on the mainstream.

What a drag, though. Everyone making fun of Scaruffi (who sometimes really gets it wrong, I have to admit), but are you able to hold a discussion in front of Scaruffi? Do you have 3 percent of his musical knowledge (and not just musical)? Have you carefully read his notes on the Beatles? It doesn't seem so to me. It seems to me that he demonstrates why the Beatles didn’t invent what the masses demand the Fab Four created. Please read carefully. This, however, is a great album.
