Well, honestly, I don't really see such a big difference between Wish You Were Here, Dark Side, and Animals... they are three albums that draw from prog, some more, some less. More psychedelic (even if it's living room psychedelia) Dark Side, progressive and psychedelic Wish and Animals.

But the funky is more "shot in the dt" just because they want to emphasize, as the ultra-technical band they are, precisely the funk aspect. It seems more intense to you just because they are Metal prog, thus more formally aggressive.
