Toni Baloni has uttered excellent words. Music is clearly influenced by politics and society.

Come on, you know very well that this isn't the point. I explained to you why that ranking should be taken with a grain of salt. I assume (I assume, okay?) that you don't know bands like My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Pixies, etc. because if you did know them (and if you understood the importance they had in the history of rock), you'd be the first to shudder at that ranking. That ranking is blatantly Popular in origin, or anyway has prioritized the most resonant song. It's no coincidence that Oasis is the most famous group in that ranking. Not that I want to take anything away from "Live Forever," which is a really beautiful song, an anthem in the good sense of the word. Especially since it lacks a song like "Debaser" by the Pixies, for crying out loud, if that's not an anthem, what is?

Well, because that is the task of a critic; what is needed is to resort to the most impartial method possible. I will repeat ad nauseam that discussing and evaluating a handful of groups is one thing, while evaluating a thousand groups, as Scaruffi does, is another. It's obvious that a perfect critical consistency among the thousand groups he has reviewed cannot exist, but that's expected. It would be like searching for the perfect and definitive philosophy, a rather daunting and impossible task. Scaruffi's point of view is always relative, but it is a relativity that is at least justified, unless there are glaring historical inaccuracies.

It's not about defending, but about understanding others' points of view, which is quite difficult these days.

Well, I really don't get it... but isn't this just straightforward, overplayed Hard Rock??

Then the fact that a band like Yo La Tengo is missing is further proof that this is a, ehm, "popular" chart...

Well, it would be worth understanding what is meant by anthem... stadium song? or anyway a catchy song that gets stuck in your head? In this sense, it wouldn’t be the highest quality anthem... and then let’s look at the ranking.. mumble mumble, My Bloody Valentine in the last place?? and Live Forever by Oasis in the first?? and the Pixies, who are among the last places?? and Pavement? and Joy Division, respectively in 19th and 20th place?? I think there’s no doubt, this ranking is compiled NOT based on quality, but on the popular appeal of each chorus... Keep in mind that My Bloody Valentine alone are worth more than all the other bands mentioned in the ranking :-P

I'm glad there are people like cptgaio who rightly downplay an album like Lateralus, considering it overly verbose (a very fitting attribute), and emphasize, also rightly, that Aenima is the best album by Tool. Well done!
