Nine Inch Nails The Fragile

Well, enough with the flutes and the pipes... The fact that this is a concept does not justify the lack of structural variety in some songs... It's the expressiveness of the tracks that connects them, reinforcing my belief that there are probably some fillers and b-sides in this album...

I liked Tears of valedictorian, I haven't listened to this one. I particularly like the sound of the keyboard.

I listened to the sample... what the heck is that?? It's blackened! Then I listened to another song from the album that has an intro that could easily be mistaken for a Rush song (Farewell in particular)... they really suck, unfortunately.

Anyway.. aside from the 18-minute suite that offers some interesting insights, the "onesta" sleep together and the catchy the sentimental, the album seems to follow the line of the latest Pt: cold and expressionless. Slightly better than Deadwing, but still insufficient in my opinion.

Well, thinking about it, Mike isn't entirely wrong; or rather... the album is very nice, but the word "masterpiece" has been thrown around too often when, in my opinion, The Fragile is not a masterpiece. Some songs don't convince me; they could have been developed differently. The vocals across the different songs are very similar (in terms of melody), and indeed, Trent either screams or whispers... he doesn't know how to do anything else. Moreover, the structures of some songs are mirror-like, with similar verses, choruses that echo each other... and there are definitely hints from TDS. For example, The Wretched has a refrain that's WAY too similar to Mr. Self Destruction.

Yes, the artist creates without excessive mediation of the intellect, but then the work takes on a concrete and well-defined form, and enters the realm of Culture...and that's when the critics step in!

"I have a hard time even giving Deadwing a 3, since it sounds almost entirely like a work that has only the glossy and incredibly digital recording to show for it." I told you... WHAT DID I TELL YOU??
