Of course it wouldn’t be the same metal without them, but for better or for worse (where do you think Power came from, for example? Also from the Maiden, as far as I'm concerned. Power isn’t exactly the pinnacle of life). Ah, Metal isn’t a niche product, come on... it sells a lot (let's just look at Italy), there are as many metalheads as you want. And many of the bands that sell are pathetic, expressionless, and stereotyped Power Prog groups, in a word: useless. Regarding the "verse-chorus-solo," it’s not inherently bad to use this formula (even though it would be nice if some got out of it), the problem is HOW they use this formula. Even the Pixies’ Doolittle fit into the song form, but they break it down and rework it personally with originality, something the Maiden haven’t done in a very, very long time. Regards.

You are a bit like LeRoy in this situation. Anyway, we think the same way about the concept of culture. I despise the dominant culture (just like you do), which is that way simply because society owns the means of cultural production and subjugates us (but also because the masses are mediocre and allow themselves to be dominated like chickens). It's just that for me, going against the culture is also part of culture, simply because everything that humans create and experience is culture. I agree with you: school creates automatons, empty vessels of culture, cultural amoebas. There’s no room for reworking, for creativity. Many people in my former class graduated with high marks, and they are absolutely flat individuals. People who won’t leave a mark. I graduated with a very low grade. We need a nice cultural revolution à la Mao (when I say "cultural," I also include spirituality, esotericism, and all those beautiful things that you like and that would fascinate me too).

Vic is funny: I took an exam at university a few days ago and had to prepare right on Wittgenstein, Carnap, Neurath, Schlick and the like. Do you think why Wittgenstein says what you wrote? Because for the Neopositivists every "metaphysical question," every practically unsolvable dilemma was "magic," stuff for superstitious people. You also have to understand the context of Vienna at the time; the "sturm und Drang" wasn't very developed there. Often these guys from the Vienna Circle would contradict themselves too, but that's obvious: contradiction (in my opinion) is an integral part of dialectics. Every "respected" philosopher ends up contradicting themselves at some point in their life, but why is that? Because logical contradiction is "psychologically physiological." It's a logical necessity.

I know that everyone pales in comparison to them, that's why I take them as an example! X-D

MMM.. I honestly don't agree, DottorGonzo. It's not true that all genres are commercial; shoegaze is not commercial (at least here in Italy), not even if they find the records in stores of Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine! But who knows these bands?! (Unfortunately I add... or fortunately? Who knows) The historical value is important, but it is inextricably linked to the originality of a work. If an album is not very original, often (not always, let’s be clear), it has little historical significance. Obviously: if you don’t say anything personal, how can you be relevant to history? Furthermore, innovation and originality are not the same thing (as the good easycure has often reminded us here on Deabser; I don't want to take any "credit" for that), you can be original without being innovative. No problem at all. But not being even a little original... would mean playing something that has already been done in the past and therefore makes little sense to play again... Anyway, changing the subject, Pretazzo is right; Debaser is the best music review website in Italy because, while on one hand it doesn't hold back insults and extreme arguments, on the other it offers the opportunity for much more interesting and "intellectualizing" reflections than other sites.

Good job, Riccardo. An album like Repeater by Fugazi is a disgrace to be known by four dogs.

You see, Lanfranco, I'm talking about Rock in general, and you've fixated on metal (which, by the way, is still a rock genre; let's not forget that). It's not about acids, my friend; it depends on what other bands you listen to and know besides Metal. I'm not denying the importance of the Maiden, but the albums you've mentioned are not masterpieces for me, that's all. The fact that they still sell a lot, you know better than anyone (I know you do), means absolutely nothing. The masses don't matter when judging an album. Who knows My Bloody Valentine? They are worth more than all the Maiden's boxed set albums combined. Those guys were truly innovators and original at the same time.

Here’s the point: I don’t really see the Maiden at high levels in the 90s! How well they can play matters very little to me; even the DTs can play excellently, but without a minimum of originality and something interesting to say... it’s no coincidence that 90% of today’s metal (at least the "classic" kind) is really terrible due to the inflation of metal stereotypes and canons that are: standardized riffs, standardized solos, standardized high notes, standardized instrumentals (which almost always leads to prog metal)... returning to a discussion we had in another review, today’s metal (to a large extent, not all OBVIOUSLY) isn’t so much less commercial than Pop...
