It depends, Jim, on what you mean by commercial. It's important to clarify that "commercial" is not a genre, but rather a way of making music: not expressing one's emotions to the public, but following the public's idea to sell more. Personally, I believe that the Pink Floyd began with this album to want to make their style lighter so that it could be understood by most people (which is different from playing what people like), and to be honest with you, I really don't know what could have been "commercial" in a period like 1973.

This is very nice. Not necessarily the best (which is hard to proclaim), but certainly not the crap that many define it as. I would advise the latter to go protest in the reviews that truly kill music (like the puppets and the pretty boys of MTV) rather than come criticize an album with tracks like Money: one of the most beautiful pieces of not-so-psychedelic, very symphonic and virtuosic prog-rock.

I'm tired of hearing "this is not a masterpiece because albums that I consider masterpieces aren’t." First point: a masterpiece is something objective; if it reflects the characteristics, then it can be defined as such, otherwise it is not. Second point: you cannot compare a band to previous albums, but it is more logical to compare it to the era it is in, because music is IN-CONTINUOUS-MOVEMENT and it is a way to convey through art the feelings of the artist to the audience of the TIME! Period.

classic pimp copied from the dream theater house? copied from what? do you know what the re-birth of prog in the 90s is? This is one of those albums. And "a change of seasons," manu, should also be highlighted among the giants of prog: one of the most beautiful prog songs ever!
