Great album indeed, even better than the three predecessors. Well-written and comprehensive review, but you should have also mentioned another magnificent track, "Le Figlie Della Tempesta"! The cover is also beautiful, one of the best I've ever seen, and perfectly captures the music of the album. Absolutely recommended.

Look, are they South Africans? I had heard one of their songs once, it wasn't bad, but it sounded very "Grunge," and therefore terribly out of place.

Yes, I generally agree. Let's just say that "Serenades" is on the same level as "As The Flowers Wither" and "Judgement" can stand up to "The Light...", but with the latest albums the gap has widened a lot. The situation for Paradise Lost is different; they have not been forgiven for their musical shift, perhaps because it was an abrupt change rather than a slow evolution like in the case of Anathema. Of course, these guys never released a nonsense like "Host"!

Indeed, Anathema have opted for the (legitimate) choice of offering music that is much more accessible compared to the Doom Metal of their early days, but if we compare this album to "The Silent Enigma," it feels very small.
