Very, very interesting this proposal. Congratulations barret! And thanks also to Airone for mentioning Richard Strauss (of whom we almost always only hear the "Zarathustra")!

And thanks also to Saturnina, who wrote to me while I was writing the previous post ;))

Many thanks to Cleo (so kind!) and a special thanks to El Guevo, with whom I certainly share a remarkable affinity for tastes! Just this evening I listened to "Greatest Palace Music" again and I must say that the more time passes, the more I agree that even "Greatest" deserves a solid 5, as almost everything from Will does! By the way... in that album there's a beautifully unsettling "More Brother Rides" ("We're busted up, so ragged down and kissing and subsisting..."). Hasta luego everyone, J.O.P. ;-))

Hal, I listened to "Ain't You Wealthy, Ain't You Wise" a few days ago and now I’m almost re-listening to "Master" on repeat!!! Regarding "Greatest Palace Music," I agree with you, while still appreciating some beautiful moments like "The Brute Choir," "Agnes, queen of sorrow" (both with Marty) or the hypnotic "Riding." Bye, J.O.P. :))

For Hal, it is an honor for me to be commented on so thoughtfully by you ;)) And I must say that your previous reviews on BPB were equally beautiful, precise, and timely!!! I got "Master and Everyone" after reading your review, and I too found those simple, essential, and poetic atmospheres that you perfectly captured and highlighted here on DeBaser. Ah, by the way, I recently ordered the CD by Marty Slayton, which I believe is much more "Nashville"!!! I’ll let you know. Hasta luego to everyone, including Rancid, to whom I still can't forgive that “chronically incapable of singing” attributed to Leonard Cohen!!! Bye

There is, however, one more thing to add. And that is that if you know "Greatest Palace Music," you might struggle to find the sounds of those songs in this album. For example, "I am a cinematographer" is much more celebratory in "Greatest Palace Music," and it has very little of the slight melancholy that, in my opinion, shines through in all its depth here. However, I must admit that "You Will Miss Me When I Burn" (which I unfortunately listen to at least once a day...) is perhaps better in "Greatest Palace Music." There, too, is the splendid voice of Sue Schofield that doubles BPB by bitterly repeating that chorus "When you have no-one/No-one can hurt you"... Chills, chills, chills.

Wow, a pandemonium was already breaking loose here!!! To be honest, this album is quite different from the debut "There Is No-One What Will Take Care Of You" (which El Guevo described very well) or from "Arise Therefore" (which I adore, with its dark and introspective atmospheres, as often happens with Will). Let's say this is a more "trembling" album compared to the ones you mentioned. Much more "fragile." And perhaps that’s what makes it more difficult or even a bit irritating. A friend of mine, for example, didn’t like it and told me it sounds like it was recorded in a basement ;))

Captivating review, Francesco. I'm also fascinated by gray, a "color-non color" with so many shades and modulations that it alone is worth an entire palette. I'm just a bit intimidated by those 15 musicians... I usually prefer more "chamber" dimensions of jazz. But I've taken note of this album! Bye ;)

Hal, yesterday morning I was in Liguria and I found myself facing a gray-blue sea, furrowed and lyrical... For me, a man of mists and plains from a corner of Lombardy, this sea, a bit melancholic and a thousand colors between gray and green, is always a beautiful spectacle... Who knows why, while I was walking there, "Coruscating" by Surman came to mind. But I still can't find the right words to convey what it makes me feel, damn it! The same goes for the sea when summer plunges into autumn. I stand there, enchanted, and I don't know what to say. But who knows... maybe soon the spark will come to me and then... I will DeScribe it!!! Bye and thanks again ;))
