Johann Sebastian Bach - Glenn Gould Variazioni Goldberg
Voto:
If Count Keyserlingk had listened to "these" Goldbergs, he wouldn't have fallen asleep at all, but would have been swept away in a kind of mystical ecstasy! Unreachable and unattainable (not even by Gould himself in the subsequent 1982 recording). In this work, the great Glenn achieves a total fusion of spirit with the piano and with the music, in a sublime concentration and artistry from the introductory air to the final "variatio." From this record, the Goldbergs will never be the same. Any pianist or harpsichordist will have to contend with Glenn Gould's Goldbergs, which are "the Goldbergs." Period. This star-studded album deserves ten stars, truly.

Stefanet, you are one of the best here at DeB!!! Refined choices, perfectly documented descriptions, a fluid and delicate writing style. 5 full stars to you and to EGEA, an extraordinary record label that publishes masterpiece after masterpiece and deserves the right visibility. I also take this opportunity to applaud, alongside a giant like Pieranunzi, Gabriele Mirabassi, a great clarinetist. Bye ;)) JoP

Hello antoniodeste!!! It's a great pleasure to read you again! Thanks to you and Stefanet, I think I'm going to (re)discover a bit of Cockburn... ;)) Going back to "I see a darkness," I absolutely place it in my "top ten." Here in DeB, there's a beautiful review by benzo24 that really deserves a careful read! From that album, my favorite is "Another day full of dread," a song that constantly loops in my head... Oh, one additional note. "I see a darkness" has a booklet with beautiful drawings that perfectly "illustrate" the songs. Just for that, it would be worth having this CD... Saludos a todos... Hasta luego!!! ;)) JoP

For a lover of Brazilian music like me, Deodato is one of those musicians you can't miss. Very good, ZiOn! If all the bowling clubs had someone like that, dear Elvezio, I truly believe I would make bowling one of my favorite hobbies…

This week I've been slacking off here in DeB, and here's the first review... "stolen"!!! Well done, Stefanet, for introducing Gary, an absence that was heavily felt!

Eh... indeed, they always tell me that I’m too serious and that I don’t get jokes ;)) Back to "One Note Samba," you are absolutely right. It’s a difficult song to interpret precisely because making that single note expressive... is quite a challenge!!! I’ll vote for you again, dear Lazzaro, for bringing the beautiful music from Brazil back to DeB. Bye ;)

Uhmmm... I'm not too convinced by Fitzgerald singing the great Tom. "He's a carioca" loses all that tenderness, that Brazilian mood of the original and beautiful "Ela é carioca." I don't quite agree on "One note samba" either, as the best version for me remains that of Josee Koning. However, credit where it's due, dear Lazzaroblu, for your choice and for remembering the great Toots Thielemans, whose harmonica sparkles even with another great Brazilian interpreter: Elis Regina. Just listen to "Waves" to be enchanted ;)) Ciao, JoP

Uhmmm Enea... now that you've mentioned Danzig, I thought of the cover of "Thirteen" sung by Johnny Cash. And the (out of place) criticism he received for that song (which he reinvented in a wonderful way), given that he had always professed to be a "believing Christian." I vote again.
