Franz Schubert Quintetto per archi in do maggiore D 956

Wonderful review, as usual. And with a well-researched "demographic" introduction about the "scythe" that struck many composers at a young age. I just want to add that while the great composers of the past did experience "various misfortunes," almost all were perfectly "healthy" from a mental perspective. The only exception was Schumann (who is still absent here in DeB), with his "visions" and his attempt at suicide by drowning... A stark contrast to today’s musicians, some of whom have taken matters into their own hands (Curtis or Cobain, for example) or who proclaim lyrics that are actual treatises on depressive psychopathology (like Will Oldham... just look at the drawings that accompany the booklet of "I see a darkness"). Hello everyone, JoP

I happened to re-listen to his cover of "Knocking On Heaven's Door" (The Wind) a few days ago, and I must say I found it chilling... Perhaps not always consistent in his production, but Warren Zevon is truly an artist worth rediscovering. Good job, cece.

This is a beautiful record, and well done Lello for bringing it to attention. More than sad, it's very nostalgic, and so I agree with gabbox who speaks of "saudade." "Lucky one" is piercing, a wound from which blood flows. Hello everyone, JoP

'Azz, beautiful recommendation for an artist I don’t know!! Stunning cover, and there’s also Nina Miranda... This is one of those classic albums I start to like even before I listen to it... Congrats gabbox ;) JoP

I completely agree with Massimof about Tom Petty. After all, Johnny Cash noticed it too in American III. Well done, Mauri!

True, Hal, I will think about it!! Let's vote for the Mullah again because he deserves it, in the meantime!

Ah... "Travels"!!! You made me think of the beautiful reinterpretation of this piece on one of Charlie Haden's latest albums, "American Dreams"! Instead, if I remember correctly, in this old "Works" series from ECM there were also collections by Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea... Definitely worth revisiting.

You’re right, Mullah, about the “Christmas” reviews… I had entertained the idea of reviewing Giovanni Sebastiano's Christmas Oratorio for a while, but then I threw in the towel… It will be for another time… or rather, for Christmas 2006 ;) Overall, I have a somewhat contentious relationship with romantic music… I know very little about Liszt, and this one not at all. Nonetheless, your excellent review has piqued my curiosity, and I will catch up on it as soon as possible ;) By the way, this CD has a beautifully fairytale-like cover!!! I agree with Grass and I also wish happy holidays to the whole "loggione" ;) Bye, JoP

Thank you to everyone who commented on this review of an album that I love very much since its first listen (which was quite some time ago...). Gabbox is right, though... it's not music for every hour, and indeed I feel it very much as mine at this moment, where I mainly listen to the quintet, which gives me a sense of deep reflection, an absolute masterpiece. Nobody and Copernico: I respect both of you, and you know it from our "private" messages. With Nobody, I have a friendship (if we can call it friendship in this "phantasmagorical" world of this site, but I believe I feel friendship) since my arrival in DeB. It's not a captatio benevolentiae, but rather an affinity between two similar yet different personalities. Not the same, obviously, but just akin. Nobody is multifaceted, I am more tetragonal, perhaps. Copernico, the ratings don’t matter, but what counts for me is having piqued your curiosity. So if you get the chance... listen to the great Schnittke. By the way, it also costs very little (which is never a bad thing), as the Mullah rightly pointed out (hi dear!). Finally... I'm a bit caught up with work but as always I manage to carve out some space here in DeB, so as soon as possible the samples will also arrive. Thanks again to everyone. JoP
