Yes, certainly in I&W Petrucci does an excellent job, but that's what he knows how to do, and let's give him credit, he does it very well. He is a great metal guitarist, although, in my opinion, he has become expressively dry in recent times. Lukather is a complete guitarist: he can play metal, rock, jazz, blues, giving the impression that he has always played only one of those genres, and if he sets his mind to it, he can play all of Petrucci's scales perfectly. Petrucci will never be a Lukather because if he strayed from his genre, well, I have my doubts that he could create something good. A virtuoso is not measured by the number of notes played or the difficulty of execution but by mastery of the instrument, and by mastery, I mean the unconditional ability to bend the instrument to one's will, to make it do everything possible and imaginable. The virtuoso is like a kind of jukebox loaded with an infinite number of records.

Well done, captain. Unfortunately, I am one of those heretics who has only seen the movie, but whenever I open an old book with yellowed pages, I make sure not to lick my fingers...

But precisely because you don't have a deep knowledge of the artists you mentioned, the comparisons become misguided and even pointless. Believe me, it makes no sense to lump together Beck, Page, Malmsteen, and Vai; at that point, you might as well compare them with Holdsworth, Montgomery, and Martino.

Certainly, but it has nothing to do with a review of Jeff Beck. You can't review Beck or Hendrix or Alvin Lee and drag in the usual Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, or Michael Angelo as an improper point of comparison. Always wanting to emphasize: “Here’s the one who really plays, these others are just circus animals.” This is the classic review of someone who has never heard anything by Beck and, if I may say so, knows nothing about Malmsteen or Satriani either.

The review wasn't bad, but mentioning the usual Vai, Malmsteen (guitarists without "sense") is a cheesy lapse in style.

Well, I wouldn't say they're my absolute favorite, that might be an exaggeration, but they definitely count among their ranks some of the best musicians out there.
