Piracy has always existed; paradoxically, this is the generation with the least piracy. The PS3 was virtually impossible to hack until recently, while the X360 could be pirated but was also prone to getting banned from online play. Not to mention that it has the highest attach rate in history (8.6 titles sold per console, despite piracy, no one has ever done better), compared to the 5.4 titles per console for the PS3, which has no piracy. The industry has never sold as much as it does today; piracy is in 90% of cases a convenient excuse for failures.

give in to the fact that Rockstar is simply better, as they are able to consistently replicate success. I understand the disappointment; if you've spent 50 bucks (or 60 or 70 since you got it for PS3), I get that it really gets on your nerves. The truth is that the game is just mediocre while everyone was expecting a masterpiece. Take comfort in knowing that the same happened to me with Bioshock 2.

But it's not that the products are worse today than before. The fact is that the most advertised ones are not the best at all, as they used to be. Those who rely on consoles are effectively subjected to "the industry" in the most literal sense of the term, with retail prices of 70 euros plus DLCs of 10 euros a go. After all, if this business model works, it's precisely because of the "console gamers." But this isn't a problem that only affects this sector; music, cinema, and telecommunications aren't doing any better. Goods that are increasingly accessible to the masses are sold at outrageous prices (for example, the iPhone 4 in the USA costs $189, less than 150 euros, while here it costs over 600 euros), because this is the realm that belongs to the ignorant and uninformed masses.

I wouldn't make forced comparisons with GTA; Mafia is sandbox only in name, and the first one was still a strictly linear title. Rockstar has always been able to rely on much larger teams and unlimited funds (especially since every GTA chapter either sells or there are serious consequences), while Irrational hasn’t exponentially grown since the first Mafia. Yet, the engine of GTA 4 is a piece of crap that leaks in every direction, while Mafia 2's engine is decidedly solid. If you're talking about San Andreas, then you’re simply facing the difference in "skill" between one developer and another. Rockstar may not be Blizzard, but they are definitely more skilled than average.

I speak freely, since the title is effectively abandonware, there are no longer any developers, publishers, or distributors, so sharing via torrent cannot be pursued in any way by anyone. You either spend between 50 and 80 euros on eBay to grab one of the few remaining copies, or "elsewhere" you can find the tracker, but there are few (albeit excellent) seeds, which vary depending on the time of day. You might get it in an hour or in 12 hours, in short. Obtaining it is still a walk in the park compared to getting it to start and work properly (which is 100% impossible for various reasons), unless you have an old 486 or a first-generation Pentium with DOS or Windows 95 in your attic.
