Maybe it's a bit unpopular, but I believe that all this talk about influences is a bit overrated. It’s not that studying the influences and cross-pollinations between groups isn’t ā€œtechnicallyā€ interesting, but it seems to me that sometimes, to justify the fact that an album is good because we like it, there’s an overwhelming need to show that there’s some objective reality behind it, like the influence exerted on subsequent generations.
However, for me, the discourse is delicate; influence can also be misleading. Nowadays, all the 18-year-olds forming rock bands are ā€œinfluencedā€ by Oasis, but we all know that’s just due to their fame. The Velvet Underground, on the other hand, influenced hundreds of bands without selling anything.
In the case of The Doors, I think we should have the courage to candidly acknowledge that the album deserves 5 stars simply because it’s remarkable; it is today and it was the day it was released. 5 stars, period. Whether it influenced anyone or not is a difficult thing to determine, especially since they were so famous. In the end, we don’t listen to music because it influenced another famous group 20 years later; we listen (at least I do) to music because we like it, and that’s the fundamental fact. So let’s just stick with 5... :-)

Come on, but how can you spit on Jim Morrison like that? His influences, his acting and theatrical abilities, the incorporation of this characteristic into a rock context (just listen to Nico’s albums, maybe) are unique, original, and incredibly important, whether you like it or not. The foundations are just completely missing here.

I don’t agree at all with ringostarfish or francis. I certainly didn’t grow up with the Doors; I'm 24 years old and I started seriously listening to them two years ago: their album is unmatched, I mean in terms of listening experience: it’s incredibly beautiful, original, and creative. The Doors are liked because they are great, not because of Jim’s coolness. Girls like them for Jim’s coolness, but that’s another story. I agree with Jim Morrison regarding the discourse on the review and on a possible piper. Francis’s comments about the phone call etc. are ridiculous; the review remains pathetic, and the excuse of wanting to stir feelings is pitiful (you might be taking yourself a bit too seriously for a scaruffi2, it seems to me). It’s true that those who insulted him "miss the point," but he sought out the insults himself, and he was the first to throw insults around, resulting once again in a predictable way, given that this isn’t the first review he’s written on Debaser.
