Bruce Springsteen Darkness On The Edge Of Town

However, I don't think a record can be dismissed like this with such a review, I'm sorry Daniele. You've got the crux of it, but a bit more effort to understand this is absolutely Springsteen's most "hard-hitting" album was needed. As for the album, for me, it's one of Springsteen's best alongside Born to Run and The River. The songs are like little movies. Ruthless and tough songs. And live, these songs are and have been phenomenal.

Grasshopper: "...the most balanced phrase was said by Ale, too bad it appeared in gray: 'However, analyzing rationally, from a strictly musical point of view, it can't be called a masterpiece.' And why should this Ale be right? Or rather, why should he be more balanced than me or Enea or primiballi??????? Maybe because he's closer to your thesis???? Argh! GrassH, come on! Good grief! You just turned on an electric turbine to bring water to your mill. For you and others it's a 4, for me and (many) others it's a 5, and who do you give the Golden Palm of balance to????? To Ale who says it’s not a masterpiece….. For him it’s not a masterpiece, for me it is, so how do we resolve that????? Perhaps you didn’t read my previous sentence: in my opinion, we are all right from our personal and very narrow point of view. I believe it’s not right to impose our point of view as the most balanced, objective, etc., because coming from just one person it is necessarily only SUBJECTIVE. Maybe a judgment meter, as trivial as it may be, could be how many people liked it. But it's better not to bring that up since this record has sold like hotcakes, right? I'll see you Monday morning, don't worry!"

AjejeB... the rimic of Cuccuruccucù, try to hear it with the ears of 1981. If you were there at the time... Of course, if you listen to it now, after 25 years of albums, it's clear that it's not a masterpiece. If the music seems flat and trivial to you, I repeat, maybe you weren't there in 1981. Or, and rightly so, for you and for Grasshopper (and for me, and for Enea and for each of us) it’s just a matter of taste. It’s clear that we defend our respective positions here, but many times we forget that the taste of the other is as valid as our own and is neither better nor worse than ours, it’s just another point of view (I’m giving myself a little self-lecture). So... everything goes!

Grasshopper, I didn’t say you’re a snob. And I don’t think that. However, your reasoning doesn’t take into account the fact that this album, even today, after almost 25 years, is fresh and beautiful like a rose. If you play it for a young person, I really don’t think they would find it outdated. On the contrary. I believe it would be successful even today (clearly with a different production). Why not? The fact that other Battiato albums are worthy or superior is a matter of taste. I repeat, this one is probably simpler, but it has that kind of simplicity that leaves you speechless when you listen to it. But maybe I judge records from a slightly different perspective than yours. From your posts, you give a lot of weight to every single line of the lyrics, while I am more influenced by the overall impact of music and lyrics. In fact, more than that, a beautiful poem with a bad melody does not make a beautiful song. Yet, millions of great songs with mediocre lyrics survive. Why? I believe it’s because the song is melody above all else. But maybe I’ve digressed a bit too much…

Grasshopper, I just hope it wasn't the success of this album, as you suggest, that made you (a bit) snub it. If it was successful, it wasn't due to the summer madness of 1981, nor to fashion, nor to the sunglasses... haven't you considered that the success might be solely attributed to the beauty of the album? It sold because it was (is) beautiful. I don't think it takes much more explanation. There weren't many songs as captivating and innovative in 1981. Let's try to compare the albums released that year. Sure, some songs are "simple" melodically. But dazzling. The content? ā€œCerco un centro di gravità permanente,ā€ to me, has always given the impression of a true quest by the artist (we’ve seen it in the following years) for something more serious and profound in life. ā€œGli uccelli,ā€ I really know very few songs as beautiful as that. The rhythm of "Cuccuruccucù"... In the summer of 1981, no one was crazy. It's just that Battiato composed a magnificent album.

Really, ajeje, today you are a complete disappointment. After Battiato, are you now going to denigrate De André as well? There is no longer any faith...

Well, this time I'm totally backing Enea. You don't mess with saints.

No GrassHopper, I didn't see this coming!!!!!! I can't believe it! Come on... "content"... let's not exaggerate. It's not a literary work. It's just light music, as they used to say. Let's not lose sight of the subject of the discussion. And where can you find light music like this anymore??????? It's monumental. For me.
