In the film, it’s the father who gets killed, but in the album it was the father who killed the lover. This is clearly shown in the lyrics included in the booklet, specifically in the song "1921" (and anyway, as the story progresses, the father keeps appearing while the lover is no longer present).

In agreement with odradek... just Stipe's voice alone is enough to gain at least 2 votes... mantaray, the rating you gave does not correspond to the review you wrote (which I do agree with, also regarding Leaving New York). You can't give 1/5 to an album that, while a bit too familiar and hard to listen to twice in a row, still presents some great songs (especially Final Straw), performed by musicians in excellent shape. It's no coincidence that in live performances they are delivering their best and are much more convincing than they are on this album.
