Immense Tarkovsky, and what you say about photography is true. Moreover, it’s also true that perhaps Kubrick's so sterile and narcissistic style takes something away from the atmosphere, compared to more artisanal but perhaps more aware productions. Fidia, for the first time on this page I don't quite agree: Omen (the original) doesn't drive me crazy.

I liked it a lot too: a film without any pretentiousness, no intellectualism, just a real horror thriller. And then a leap with a flip at least is guaranteed. Scary, huh?

burns, but I wasn't recommending you to watch August Underground, quite the opposite. It's just that you mentioned Guinea Pig and I thought if you like that kind of crap, you should check out Mordum and you've seen the unbeatable top in that regard. But the film is truly insipid beyond words as far as I'm concerned. For the first time, I'm almost in agreement with Marco :) Perhaps I'm not entirely on the same page regarding the tension those two films create, but Shining (which for me may not be a masterpiece of horror but is nonetheless a film made with balls, acted amazingly, and has some legendary scenes) can't be put on the same level as certain little movies.

I really like "the thing" by Carpenter; the ending is amazing.

Yes, I understand what you mean, and on top of that, I am one of the enthusiasts mentioned above (actually, I could add things like the act of seeing with one's own eyes, in a glass cage, the embryo hunts in secret, begotten among disturbing things, or Kairo or Descent among pajura films), but Spell, enthusiast or not, is an hour and a half of boredom. Visionary director here, visionary director there, for me the best thing about that film is the title. Just as I understand Cannibal Holocaust, I understand Salò, which is a masterpiece, but films like Guinea Pig or Faces of Death or August Underground Mordum (by the way, since you're interested: IGN Italia /////// link rotto are ugly and extremely boring. Just because everything is underground doesn't mean it's all beautiful; not everything extreme makes sense even in that perspective. And I don't understand disdaining directors simply because they are more famous: The Last House on the Left may be garbage, true, but the first Nightmare is, for example, not bad. You’re just looking for a different type of film.

No, I have nothing against the underground (I haven't seen Der Todesking in prime time on Channel 5) and I know many of the films mentioned; it's just that citing little movies like Guinea Pig or Spell: Sweet Murder and passing them off as masterpieces (and as horror!) just because few people know them is a bit of a snobbish nonsense. Shining isn't a scary movie, and it may not be Kubrick's masterpiece, but there’s a big gap between that and comparing it to certain things.

I don’t know, your argument seems a bit snobbish to me. I mean, I can agree that A Clockwork Orange might be overrated and that The Shining isn’t the best horror film, but you can’t just randomly mention underground films (come on, Guinea Pig... and August Underground Mordum not among the delicacies?) as better horrors than The Shining. Additionally, you mention Buttgereit and don’t include Der Todesking, which is truly a great masterpiece, far beyond Nekromantik.

but then what does it have to do with the horror spell sweet slaughterhouse?
