Damn Dave, I was about to say that deep down you're not so bad but that you just have some (fucking) prejudices to shed, but when you say stuff like this you just drop the ball...

Yes, they have some differences, but they are "bordering" genres (for example, why couldn't Dragonforce be considered prog metal?). "Stay Out" is beautiful! :)

The funny thing is that you nitpick the differences between two groups that (well, it’s been a few years since listening, but not so long that you can’t remember what they did) are quite similar. For other things where there are groups that are REALLY different, you’re ready to throw everything into the mix.

I didn't say they are the same as Rhapsody, but the genre is the same.

Dave, I can’t think about it too much because I remember very little of the music, but I have some friends who go crazy for these bands, and I have some history with them over the years (from Stratovarius to Rhapsody to Symphony X and others I've blocked out). I don’t like them; I remember very over-the-top baroque arrangements, but since I don’t recall well, I can only say that “it’s not my genre.” If we were talking about DT, though, I could go on, as I know at least the early ones very well.

I endorse the know-it-all's opinion. Perhaps if you consider these (of which a few years ago I heard an album that was truly embarrassingly ugly) the best of today's music, I completely understand why you find modern music ugly.

All very true, Psycho, I agree. Although it’s true that if the same argument were made for the rock crowd (let's say the flower children), it wouldn't paint a much better picture. I limit myself to listening to some new age albums, and there are quite a few remarkable ones. The whole corollary of religion, alternative medicine, relaxation techniques, etc., goodness gracious, let’s all save ourselves.

In my opinion, it's quite difficult to clearly establish the differences between the "slow" genres (cosmic music, Eno's ambient, world music, artists like Budd or Micus, and new age). However, I find it a bit strange that cosmic artists like Schulze are revered while the others (just because they are called new age) aren’t recognized. By the way, I'm not sure if you know an album like Magnificent Void, which could easily be by Schulze. I'll take Cretu's album, but wasn't that the one with the song that had the video playing backward?

Ah, the tangerines, I think the most recent one I heard is "force majeure," so I don't know what they're doing now (and you're not encouraging me). As for new age culture, I also think it pretty much sucks. Sure, while you're right that there are (like in all genres) beautiful things and useless stuff, it's definitely the most underrated genre. I found it strange that you, with your tastes... but Cretu is the one from Enigma (quick Google search)? Ehm, I've always snubbed them.

Why do you say new age with disgust? Steve Roach is a great artist.
