Gil Scott-Heron I'm New Here

After casually reading a few reviews, I don't know why, but I was expecting something folk/jazz, in short, with "real" instruments. As soon as the first track started with the beat used for "Flashing Lights" by Kanye West, I went to check if I had made a mistake. But I hadn't made a mistake. Disconcerting.

Well, listen to it first. I think it's worth it; in fact, I added it to my wishlist on Amazon.uk and I plan to get it soon. And then, considering Gil's story, he deserves a few coins.

The issue is this. Reading the reviews on various sites, there were always lengthy introductions about who Gil was. About his story. About his educational and artistic journey. Usually (not always) when a review of an artist starts with long words about their past, it's as if "that" past weighs on the final judgment. Like, "the album is so-so but it was composed by xxx who has a big career, so: masterpiece!!!". My approach to Gil was free from any prejudice. And I liked it a lot. Very much. My "It doesn't matter who he was" comes from this consideration. But I'm bad at explaining myself. I guess it hasn’t been understood at all. Anyway, I'll go backwards. Let's see what comes out of it. Any advice?

Yes, he has a veeeery long career. But that's not it. The album, 2010, is stunning. It doesn't matter who he was.

Re-listened. Some tracks are, personally, "annoying". You can feel the absence of guitars IMHO. The last piece is worth it.

Let's say that some pieces are splendid (the mentioned final suite). Sometimes a bit heavy to digest. Nevertheless, enjoyable and worthy of a few listens!

I listened to "Tears Laid In Heart" back then and, I'm sorry to say, it didn't excite me that much... At this point, I'm waiting for the review of the "masterpiece" and let's see if it catches my interest! :-D
