Barry Lyndon is actually not my favorite film; it's among my favorites, but it doesn't take the top spot. There is, however, another film called Fuoco Fatuo, which is also by Louise Malle, and along with La Dolce Vita by Fellini, they form the perfect triptych for me in portraying existential pain. But while both Barry Lyndon and La Dolce Vita are somewhat baroque in their staging, Fuoco Fatuo is chillingly simple, and perhaps that's why I prefer it, and I recommend/wish for you to see it. As for Jazz? Nothing else is needed, not even words.
