Trends and movements may die, but a state of mind cannot die; that's why the blues will never die. I've seen the same movies you have; you're right, the best one is Eastwood's, but damn, that guy from pianoblues knows more than Ray Charles. Scorsese, more than an obituary, created a birth certificate. He had a thesis, and he proved it. And then he chose the right people (Ali Farka Toure is great, Corey Harris is a respected bluesman and one of the greatest experts on blues roots). Wim Wenders did what he knows how to do—tell a story. And then, damn, he called Lou Reed, Marc Ribot, Nick Cave... in the end, the most valuable thing about the project is the artists who participated: between one film and the other, all the greats are there; the only one missing is Waits. Well, you can't have it all.

unfortunately, to play thrash metal you have to be pissed off. at 20, you’ve got attitude to spare; then either you calm down or you just don’t make it to 40. "St. Anger" is anger rationalized, bottled, and packaged; it’s artificial grit. Live, a bit of adrenaline always kicks in, but in the studio - and sober too - it’s a whole different story; you really have to believe it, otherwise it ends up sounding like crap. if they still wanted to play, they could have done like Zeppelin, separated (leaving the myth intact) and recorded on their own, maybe branching out into other types of music as Page and Plant did. instead, they preferred to live off their name, turning their music into just another job. they are successful entrepreneurs. they produce excellent paperweights in the shape of CDs.
