What a film! The first twenty mute minutes of desert, wells, and broken legs are pure poetry. Then begins the decline of man as the film becomes increasingly epic. With Daniel’s wealth, his aridity grows, his inability to understand his fellow men (he himself says so, when he sees someone like him, he can only hate him). In the midst of it all, scenes of great cinema, disturbing moments and a character (Ely) who is as slimy as they come and who, rightly so, meets a grim fate. Because at least the oilman doesn’t hide behind anything and it’s fitting that he gets his revenge on the other. I saw the film as an allegory of capitalism: oil as a virus that has infected America since its mythology and continues to this day, contaminating everything it finds (children, the environment, religion...). Definitely a film from another time. I’d like to point out to Supersoul and Poletti that last year a remake of Sleuth was released starring Jude Law (in the role originally played by Caine) and Michael Caine (in the role of the elder this time), directed by Branagh and written by Pinter... I was very sorry to have missed it; I’ll catch up with it as soon as possible.

In some parts, however, the movie really gave me the impression of an intellectual megatrastullo... That said, it is often brilliant and always very intriguing, a nice reflection on the potential of the human mind (and dreams as a latent symptom of that). A review that's a bit heavy...

I recently picked up From Here To Eternity and I quite like it; it sounds very dated. However, I really don't remember this one, but by the time I was born, disco was already industrial archaeology. I'll gladly give it a listen, though... great review, just a shame about a few somewhat confusing passages.
