Battiato: "Here, you could do the same thing, but in a more ethereal way."
Saturnino: "But isn’t that a bit too simple?"
Sgalambro: "Saturnino, simplicity is close to the divine."
And the boy seems to have understood it perfectly!
Great album, even though I tend to prefer the subsequent "Clima," and why not MILIARE in its niche context (Italy, Bass, Funk).
Good review, perhaps a bit too wide-eyed (A bassist, especially if a session player, of his level doesn’t really come as a surprise for showing versatility on the varying number of strings and frets of his wood).
ABOUT THE COMMENTS: Please go hide, everyone!
1. All this discussion about the pick makes no sense; a pick is used in certain contexts and serious bassists MUST know how to use it, even just for professional reasons. There’s always some kid who can’t do it or who is still so weak with his fingers that he still believes it’s only used for playing easier and faster, stubbornly waging a false and flimsy crusade against the pick. Pathetic (I’ve been through it too and have no problem recalling how "pathetic" I was myself).
2. Jim Morrison must prove to me that he knows how to accompany a funk and convey a groove BETTER than Saturnino to dare to speak again on his arguments.
A bassist who is an EXCELLENT accompanist (like Saturnino) can already be satisfied with having at least understood and cultivated the spirit of his instrument.
And it’s not just about seven years of conservatory! Hours and hours of study and interplay EVERY SINGLE DAY, to learn how to ACCOMPANY; it’s not a secondary function, for heaven's sake, it’s much more difficult than most virtuosic and flashy things that dazzle the fools with their eyes and ears fixed on the solo instruments.
Accompaniment is ART, it’s very CREATIVE, technical, and challenging, especially when the notes are few and repetitive, believe me.
And anyway, Saturnino has quite the nimble hand for those who love technicality for its own sake.
Better to say two elementary words with a tone and authority that commands respect, than to quickly say with archaic periphrases the pitiful concept of "Look how fast and cool I am at playing!"
