The embers lie hidden beneath the ashes for many years; it only takes a small stir (the arrival of Konrad) for the heat to resurface forcefully, just like the feelings of the two protagonists...great book.

I almost forgot... please, ilfreddo, go back to the classics! I'm reading McEwan's "Atonement," which I highly recommend... in the novel there's a young girl who wrecks a man's life!

I don't know what kind of women the debaserians go out with, but I know dozens of intelligent, down-to-earth, available women who couldn't care less about "money." Perhaps it's that at around 40 years old (my age, roughly) the tables turn DRAMATICALLY?
