How did he go from classical to metal? Did he have some sort of epiphany?

Hell Awaits is the second album by Slayer, released in 1985. Along with its successor, Reign in Blood, it is considered one of the major influences for numerous death metal bands. Musicians like Phil Anselmo and Gene Hoglan regard the album as a significant inspiration for them. Like the first album Show No Mercy, it was released by Metal Blade Records and features a noticeable sonic shift in the band's style. With the previous EP Haunting the Chapel, Slayer began to distance themselves from the influences of Judas Priest, Venom, and Iron Maiden found in their debut record, and with Hell Awaits they fully embraced the sound that made them popular in heavy metal.

The album presents a cleaner and more comprehensible production compared to the debut, with tracks extended and made more complex. The themes of the songs are predominantly satanic (just look at the album cover to understand the content); other subjects include necrophilia and vampirism.

The record opens with the title track Hell Awaits; featuring an intro characterized by screams and the torments of damned souls, with a luciferian voice declaring Welcome Back!, thus initiating an extremely heavy and aggressive song. Notably, the aforementioned intro, when played backward, obsessively recites the phrase "Join Us." Kill Again gained a certain notoriety in Italy in recent years following the satanic murders committed by the Beasts of Satan, which led to Slayer being accused of inciting violence and murder. Other tracks worth mentioning are Praise Of Death, At Dawn They Sleep, and the closing Hardening Of The Arteries.
