"The Stooges knew how to play." No, the Asheton brothers during the Funhouse era were pitiful (technically), and that's precisely why Funhouse came out (you can hear the difference in Raw Power where - there indeed - there’s a phenomenal guitarist). What I'm saying is that "proto-punk" bands always coexisted with prog bands; there was no annoying dualism. The talk of Punk vs. Prog started later, when the Pistols had already become famous (Lydon used to wear a shirt that said "I Hate Pink Floyd"). The resentment from punks towards that kind of music stemmed from the fact that bands like VDGG, Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Yes signed with majors, had million-dollar productions, and could wipe their asses with $50 bills. But then even the Clash went on to make millions, so those arguments don't hold water.

But it's not true that "they told all those arrogant progressive virtuosos to go to hell"... This way you belittle the Ramones and all of punk (this punk vs. prog story). They weren't born "in opposition" to something, come on. When there were the Genesis, there were also the MC5 (contemporaries). They're not telling anyone to go to hell at all.

Punk "officially" emerges with Nevermind the Bollocks (that’s where the real boom happened!), while if we talk about "ante-litteram" we could go on forever. The Detroit scene of the late '60s to early '70s? The angry English of the same years (Pink Fairies, Deviants, Third World War, etc)? The Electric Eels from Cleveland already active since '73? The Sonics? Link Wray? And eeeh, what a load of crap. :)
