beautiful cover :) I've listened to songs the lord... but it didn't grab me as much as I hoped, however I see that they are often mentioned as fundamental so maybe I'll revisit them in the future.

Yeah, well, you got what I meant :P

Well, there’s no ā€œplot,ā€ but there are a lot of pointless moments between one fight and another, and these are so disconnected from the rest and so quick that you simply can’t create any pathos, immersion, etc. I don’t know how else to explain it since I’m repeating the same things from the beginning. It feels like you’re going around in circles, and in the end, we’re saying more or less the same things; it’s just that I give it a 3 and you give it a 1...

Well, in 300 the plot was very reduced (to put it mildly), but at least the action scenes were set in a context that unfolded with the necessary calm, in a slow build-up that gave everything a certain epic "depth" and involvement that this film lacks because everything moves way too fast. Furthermore, as mentioned, I don't find the action scenes visually successful at all compared to the previous films, which rendered them very well. Here, they took the worst stereotypes of almost everything and mixed them together.

I expected something at the level of 300, which was still that ignorant and flashy, but in my opinion, it managed to have a bit of style within its limits. Here, they tried to create a deep plot, which failed since the characters are all caricatures and the action scenes end up being thrown together haphazardly and completely disconnected. They reduce to mindless killings without creating even the slightest atmosphere, as everything has to be crammed into a few minutes. The various worlds didn't excite me at all since the director basically limits himself to raiding left and right, pulling out the worst clichés of every genre (just look at fantasy). As I said, I’m not criticizing him for not resembling a Lynch film; the fact remains, however, as s4doll points out, that there are a lot of people who are actually looking for (and finding!) chissà what reflections or metaphors in this movie that simply aren’t there.

Well, in my opinion, for the average person, Lynch is indeed niche! But as I said before, the fact that he is or isn't doesn't really interest me that much, since I certainly don't quote him or watch his films to feel "cool" or anything like that, but because I think they do interesting things. I also know Svankmajer, and I actually enjoyed the Alice film you linked; similarly, I watch Tarkovsky's films as well. But that doesn't stop me from appreciating someone more mainstream like Woody Allen, whom I adore. And believe it or not, I even watch action movies with Bruce Willis and the like, which definitely don't aim to be niche or deep. What I mean is that, in my opinion, Sucker Punch is just plain bad, regardless; in addition to being pretentious in some ways without having the merit to be so.

Well, Lynch, now I’d like to know how many really know him; among my acquaintances, it’s not exactly a well-known name... but then, Pirandello and Dante are known too, and their works certainly have an intent that is definitely "niche" or in any case doesn’t follow ā€œcommercialā€ logics; it’s not the number of admirers that makes something commercial or not (although it must be said that often the two coincide), but the content. And here there’s very little content, and in my opinion, it even fails in its aim to entertain.

Well, I wouldn't know how to tell you given my ignorance on the matter, anyway I wasn't referring to you in particular; I always prefer to remember how much beauty the artist has given me in the past and if then they want to sell themselves short, well, patience, at least they managed to gift me a few masterpieces; even though personally I can only appreciate people like Fripp who keep on undeterred and without deviations on their own path, but those are personal choices in which I don't feel I should intrude.

Well, of course that doesn’t take away from the fact that I infinitely prefer Gabriel solo to the poppy Genesis and Collins for my personal listening, but that's another story, as they say :D
