Tarantino devours all the Italian b-movies from the 70s, and soon he'll move on to the 80s.

Sociological film, or rather anthropological: an excellent snapshot of the 80s. Tarantino will soon reevaluate it as a cult movie. Federica Moro is cute and fresh... a one-of-a-kind performance, but it's not her fault: this film is the offspring of Top Gun et similia.

You dance, you dream, you get scared, you become enchanted... Legendary review for the acidic Icelander.

It's a mere peplum, or rather a bad western, artfully crafted by a certain intellectually limited and envious Hollywood intelligentsia, of which even Kubrick, despite his mastery and precise direction, unfortunately was a part... Seasoned with gratuitous anti-Roman prejudices and devoid of rigorous historical criticism—spiced with mythological sophistications of good versus evil; it’s sad to see that according to these gentlemen, with Kubrick at the forefront, in those harsh historical periods the lighthouse of civilization should come not from Rome, but from Carthage, from the Gauls, from the Germans, from the Assyro-Babylonian Semites, from the Jewish sectarians—see Talmud—from the intolerant Christians... As a salutary Diana to understand antiquity, let us read Léon Homo, La civilisation romaine: “The powerful attraction of Roman civilization, the material progress and moral advantages it embodies, will act even more imperiously on the spirit of the conquered populations and, voluntarily seduced, will lead them to Rome much more than they will impose themselves upon them” (p. 285). Homo rightly recalled that “war was the normal condition for ancient societies,” and every historian knows well that all of human history, which they often present with professional coldness, is a continuous succession and intertwining of plundering wars (“conquests”) and unique massacres of the defeated and the victors. The history of humanity, objectively observed, is predominantly an authentic criminal history (Kriminalgeschichte, titles Deschner), even if and when regulated by legal norms and rituals of theoretical and formal guarantee.
