Disney & Burton, a sappy and sloppy marriage. Plus, the 3D here is "truly" unnecessary.

"doesn't deserve the 2 billion box office" and we shouldn't mention the Lumiere brothers, says Killerjoe, making 2 wet misses. ;)
whether the film deserves it or not is up to the viewers, who seem to have appreciated it.
ironically, the Lumiere brothers made the first feature film of special effects, they didn't see their invention the way we consider "modern" narrative films, it was just an experiment, a patent that they later sold to others.
you say one right thing, Cameron is part of a category.

The only cover of "Running up that hill" by Kate Bush is worth the purchase; pleasant album, concise but effective review.

There are plenty of films that tell the same story for centuries, perhaps too many, and some of them even win Oscars (American Beauty, Gladiator, Million Dollar Baby, The Departed, No Country for Old Men, and partly also The Hurt Locker, just to mention the more recent ones), so this accusation towards Avatar seems at least ineffective or unnecessary. It is true that it has a simple, linear plot, but it is also true that everything works wonderfully; the world created by Cameron is incredibly believable and makes the audience emotionally invest in the fate of the Na'Vi people. We are talking about entertainment cinema; it's not an art film, but it's not the usual nonsense from Emmerich either (even though Stargate wasn't that bad).
