Rock is something else, see The Doors, class of 1965, 5 years later. It's true that music in those periods went through transitions overnight, but The Beatles were always tied to pre-packaged sounds, not experimenting until halfway through their career and still commercial stuff. Experimenting is different from improving one's compositional ability; there is a fine line between the two, and the Beatles knew it, and being cunning, they stayed within their little garden of blooming roses like baronets.
