I grew up in France and I talk about "Rock'n Folk" and "Best". Monthly magazines, especially the first one, which was from another planet compared to our local popsters, a bunch... which I still read during summer vacations. In an article by Hervé Picart (a prog expert, and also a musician, if I remember correctly, in the Pinhas-Heldon circle) in an issue of "Best" from '77, he talked about the ten monument albums of prog-rock, mentioning Colosseum, King Crimson, Yes, Jethro, Genesis. Not a trace of kraut, and for Canterbury, just Hatfield and the North. Magazines that I still cherish, then you do the rest.

@jargonking, In the music press, they were talking about prog-rock almost exclusively in reference to Yes, Genesis, and the like as early as '77. Before that, I don't know.
