I would say very indirectly even the coprophagous textures and something about the latest album by Decapitated. But we're mostly talking about "allusions"; in fact, Meshuggah stands on its own in metal and beyond.

but imagine if the meshuggah started copying those pathetic rap-rockers limp bizkit!! someone who claims to understand everything about meshuggah after just one listen shows that they really don't understand a damn thing!!!!!!

@rikii: I certainly don’t claim to have understood every single element and every single note of this album; we’re talking about Meshuggah, not AC/DC. Two days of listening aren’t enough to grasp them entirely. I was just saying that I believe I’ve grasped the fundamental traits and can offer a judgment, as partial and subjective as it may be.

rikiii 2 days are enough if you listen to the album enough to get a pretty clear and objective idea of it. I know the music of this band well enough to be able to give a judgment on a new album, comparing the new music to what was produced in the past and trying to catch its innovations and points of contact with previous works. If you don't like Meshuggah, that's your legitimate and respectable opinion. In the end, as always, de gustibus. Bye.

enough!!!!! enough!!!! enough!!!! and what the hell, there are more reviews of Maiden on this site than there are elements on the periodic table! and this album really really sucks! and to think that just 2 years earlier they released that monumental masterpiece known as Seventh Son of a Seventh Son..........

Despite having this album for only 2 days, I've listened to it enough to give it my judgment; in my opinion, it is the logical continuation of Nothing (the band has stated multiple times that the two works that followed Nothing, I and Catch 33, are experiments and that the new album would indeed be Obzen). Of course, we are no longer in the era of Destroy Erase Improve, but Meshuggah still shows that they know how to make killer albums. As for Fredrik Thordendal, I think he is not universally regarded as a guitar hero not for lack of technical ability—any doubts can be cleared by listening to his solo work, Sol Niger Within—but simply because, as Justice rightly says, he doesn't like to show off. Also, defining Meshuggah as technical wankery is as big a mistake as a house!!!!! Despite having incredible technical skills, they have always put technique in the service of music and not the other way around, as many, or rather too many, do. Cheers.

2007 was memorable because the new albums by CEPHALIC CARNAGE - SADIST - NILE - ILLOGICIST were released, and the monumental debut of the magnificent SICKENING HORROR!!!!!
